Early Childhood Associate – Capitol View Elementary (26/27 School Year)
Location:
Capitol View Elementary School, Des Moines, Iowa.
Starting date: Aug 14, 2026.
Position type: Full Time, Non‑Exempt.
Compensation: $17.60 to $22.61 per hour (based on skills, work experience and education).
Job DescriptionThis position requires early childhood education support for the 2026‑2027 school year.
Hiring SpecificationsRequired:
- High School Diploma, G.E.D, or HiSET.
- Child Development Associate (CDA) credential, Bachelor's Degree (BA), Associates Degree (AA), or Para‑educator Certification I (Generalist) & Para‑educator Certification II (Early Childhood).
- Willingness to obtain any one of the above credentials by signing a Para Agreement.
- Experience working with preschool children in an early childhood program.
- Basic computer skills.
Basic function: Assist teachers in instruction, supervision, and care of all students, using independent judgment.
Essential functions include:
- Create a safe, nurturing, child‑centered environment.
- Supervise students in all assigned areas.
- Contribute to curriculum planning and implementation.
- Model appropriate etiquette and mealtime conversations during meals or snacks.
- Participate in pre‑service and in‑service training aligned with program outcomes and professional development goals.
- Collaborate with parents under guidance of a supervisor.
- Assist in record‑keeping, instruction, monitoring progress, and data collection.
- Participate in first aid, CPR, mandatory child‑abuse training, and other district requirements.
- Attend family orientation and parent meetings/IEP meetings as required.
- Implement behavior‑management strategies and de‑escalate inappropriate behavior under teacher direction.
- Follow individual student behavior management plans.
- Clarify and reinforce teacher directions.
- Perform personal care duties such as feeding, toileting/diaper changes, and positioning.
- Prepare and supervise students during bus loading/unloading.
Additional essential functions for every DMPS position:
- Attend work promptly and on a regular basis.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees.
- Assist with other duties as may be assigned.
Physical demands: Constant standing, walking, bending/stooping, reaching/pushing/pulling, occasional lifting up to 20 lbs over 25 feet.
Work environment: Constant indoors, frequent outside, occasional extreme temperature/humidity.
Background Checks & RequirementsAll candidates offered a position must successfully pass a criminal background check and a child and adult abuse registry check. Certain positions may require fingerprinting, a drug and alcohol test, a physical capacity test, and/or a motor vehicle record check.
