Job Description

Des Moines Public Schools is seeking qualified applicants for the 26-27 school year to serve as an Elementary School Counselor (half‑time) and Social Emotional Behavioral Health Interventionist (the other half of the time, making for a full‑time position). This position will start in August 2026. Any educator with both a School Counselor and at least one additional teaching endorsement covering grades K‑6 is encouraged to apply.

Note there are two job descriptions below, one for each half of the position. The SEBHI portion of the position is funded using Title dollars.

Hiring Specifications

Required:

  • Valid Iowa teaching license (appropriate endorsement code for grade levels)
  • Experience working in schools or educational settings, preferably with at‑risk or high‑need student populations.

Desired:

  • Certification or licensure in school counseling or behavior analysis.
  • Experience with de‑escalation techniques and crisis intervention strategies.
  • Experience with data literacy and ability to analyze and report data.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), trauma‑informed practices, restorative practices, and social‑emotional learning frameworks.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Knowledge of Multi‑Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and Response to Intervention (RTI) models.
Basic Function

The Social Emotional Behavioral Health Interventionist is responsible for supporting students by promoting the social, emotional, and behavioral development of students. The Social Emotional Behavioral Health Interventionist serves students in Title I Targeted and School wide programs to support and provide targeted interventions for at‑risk students within the school’s MTSS. This position requires continuous use of independent judgment. The essential functions below represent only the key areas of responsibility.

Functions
  • Coordinate and provide strategic supplemental social emotional and behavioral health instruction to meet the individual needs of students.
  • Identify students with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges in need of supplemental interventions. Provide direct coaching, support, and intervention to students to help them build self‑regulation, coping strategies, and positive social skills.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, PLCs, administration, and families to identify best practices for individual and small groups of students.
  • Plan and/or teach interventions based on the learning needs of students using high quality materials based in research.
  • Use data to provide instruction to students and support access to core instruction.
  • Monitor student progress through data collection and use data to refine and improve intervention strategies.
  • Ensure intervention sequence aligns with classroom instruction, school social emotional learning focus and building MTSS.
  • Document interventions and record monitoring data in Panorama Student Success. Use graphs and progress monitoring data to make instructional decisions.
  • Participate in professional learning communities, and ongoing professional development opportunities for Interventionists.
  • Facilitate training and professional development sessions for staff on topics related to social‑emotional learning, behavioral health, trauma‑informed practices, and positive behavior interventions.
  • Engage and collaborate with families to support the social and emotional growth of students, offering resources and strategies that can be implemented at home.
