Job Description

Des Moines Public Schools is seeking a qualified Social Studies Teacher for the 26-27 school year. This position will start in August 2026.

Hiring Specifications

Required:

  • Valid Iowa teaching license (appropriate endorsement code for teaching assignment).
  • Knowledge of subject, curriculum, and effective teaching methods.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in oral and written communications.
  • Previous classroom teaching experience.
  • Experience in an urban school district.

Basic Function:

Responsible for planning and delivering a high-quality educational program to meet children’s academic and social‑emotional needs.

Essential Functions:

  • Deliver daily lessons aligned to state and district standards that meet students’ individual needs and ensure growth.
  • Create a culturally inclusive classroom that meets the academic and social‑emotional needs of students.
  • Participate in building and district professional learning communities to plan instruction, analyze data, and create assessments.
  • Monitor student learning daily; use multiple data points to guide and individualize instruction.
  • Communicate with families regularly.
  • Demonstrate progress in meeting the eight Iowa Teaching Standards.
  • Participate in professional development.

Additional Essential Functions (for every DMPS position):

  • Attend work promptly and on a regular basis.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees.
  • Assist with other duties as may be assigned.

Department: Teaching and Learning

Reports To: Building Administrator(s)

Receives Guidance From: Building Administrator(s), Directors of Elementary and Secondary Education, Curriculum Coordinator

Bargaining Agreement: DMEA

FLSA Status: Exempt

Full Time: 7.75 hour day (contract days vary by assignment)

Physical Requirements: Standing, walking, sitting, bending/stooping, reaching/pushing/pulling, lifting/carrying

Working Conditions: Mostly indoors with some outdoor responsibilities during recess and arrival/dismissal
