Elementary Social Emotional Behavioral Health Interventionist (Monroe) Job Description

Des Moines Public School District is seeking qualified applicants for the 26‑27 school year to serve as a Social Emotional Behavioral Health Interventionist. This position will start in August 2026. Any elementary endorsed applicant (K‑6) with a comfort and interest in supporting the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of students is encouraged to apply.

Hiring Specifications
  • Required:
    • Valid Iowa teaching license (appropriate endorsement code for grade levels)
    • Experience working in schools or educational settings, preferably with at‑risk or high‑need student populations.
  • Desired:
    • Certification or licensure in school counseling or behavior analysis.
    • Experience with de‑escalation techniques and crisis intervention strategies.
    • Experience with data literacy and ability to analyze and report data.
  • Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
    • Knowledge of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), trauma‑informed practices, restorative practices, and social‑emotional learning frameworks.
    • Strong communication, collaboration, and problem‑solving skills.
    • Knowledge of Multi‑Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and Response to Intervention (RTI) models.
Essential Functions
  • Coordinate and provide strategic supplemental social emotional and behavioral health instruction to meet the individual needs of students.
  • Identify students with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges in need of supplemental interventions; provide direct coaching, support, and intervention to help students build self‑regulation, coping strategies, and positive social skills.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, PLCs, administration, and families to identify best practices for individual and small groups of students.
  • Plan and/or teach interventions based on the learning needs of students using high‑quality materials based in research.
  • Use data to provide instruction to students and support access to core instruction.
  • Monitor student progress through data collection and use data to refine and improve intervention strategies.
  • Ensure intervention sequence aligns with classroom instruction, school social emotional learning focus, and building MTSS.
  • Document interventions and record monitoring data in Panorama Student Success; use graphs and progress monitoring data to make instructional decisions.
  • Participate in professional learning communities and ongoing professional development opportunities for Interventionists.
  • Facilitate training and professional development sessions for staff on topics related to social‑emotional learning, behavioral health, trauma‑informed practices, and positive behavior interventions.
  • Engage and collaborate with families to support the social and emotional growth of students, offering resources and strategies that can be implemented at home.
  • Report holistic and aggregated data on student progress in intervention during building quarterly reviews.
  • Work closely with teachers and school staff to create a positive school climate, integrating strategies for emotional and behavioral support into classroom practices.
  • Demonstrate consistent progress on meeting the Iowa Teaching Standards.

  • Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees.
  • Assist with other duties as may be assigned.
Physical Requirements

Standing, walking, sitting, bending/stooping, reaching/pushing/pulling.

Working Conditions

Mostly indoors with some outdoor responsibilities during recess and arrival/dismissal.
