Job Description

Des Moines Public Schools is looking for a dynamic leader to serve as Associate Principal at Roosevelt High School for the 26-27 school year. The position supports equitable instruction, student achievement, and high-quality staff performance.

Responsibilities

Basic Function: Work with the school community to create, pursue, and monitor a vision for instruction, school conditions, and collaboration that seeks equitable outcomes for students. Lead efforts for improvements in student achievement and staff performance through professional development, instructional leadership, and coordination of a comprehensive tiered intervention system. Complete formal evaluations of certified and non‑certified staff, and adhere to the Iowa Standards for School Leaders (ISSL).

  • Promote equity work by creating opportunities for underserved and unengaged students.
  • Collaborate with the principal to manage school personnel, including supervising, coaching, hiring, and retaining high‑quality staff.
  • Plan and facilitate professional development focused on evidence‑based curriculum, instructional practices, and professional learning communities.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor school improvement, academic, and culture/c climate goals.
  • Collect and analyze data to monitor student outcomes, and develop intervention support.
  • Analyze assessment results to determine progress toward improvement plan goals.
  • Develop a school culture focused on learning, continuous improvement, and collaborative practice.
  • Observe teacher performance and provide feedback based on a research‑based framework.
  • Plan professional development to meet identified needs.
  • Use resources innovatively and equitably to meet building goals.
  • Develop instructional leadership capacity of teachers and leadership teams.
  • Collaborate with families and community members to meet student needs.
  • Participate in district and building committees and related organizations.
  • Provide leadership and supervision beyond regular school hours.
Additional Essential Functions
  • Attend work promptly and regularly.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Maintain satisfactory working relationships with the public, students, and employees.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.
Hiring Specifications

Required:

  • Iowa Administrator certification with Evaluator Approval or willingness to obtain.
  • Master's degree in educational leadership.

Desired:

  • Prior educational leadership experience.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of research‑based equitable leadership practices, curriculum development, instruction and assessment best practices, student behavior management systems, PLCs, and personnel evaluation.
Physical Demands & Working Conditions

Physical demands include standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, climbing stairs, and lifting. The work environment is primarily inside the school building with occasional outside exposure.

Employment Conditions

All candidates offered a position will be required to pass a criminal background check, child and adult abuse registry check, and possibly fingerprinting, drug and alcohol test, and a physical capacity test. The position is exempt and full‑time with a 230‑day contract.

Salary

$101,609 to $112,889 per year.
