Job Title:

Utility Field Technician (Entry‑Level)

Job Summary

We are seeking an Entry‑Level Utility Field Technician to support the design and layout of overhead and underground electric distribution systems. This role is ideal for candidates looking to begin a career in utility engineering, electric distribution, or infrastructure services. You will assist with field data collection, basic design preparation, documentation, and coordination with engineers and experienced distribution system designers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with the preparation of construction orders for overhead and underground electric distribution facilities using established standards, specifications, and procedures.
  • Support the layout and design of electric distribution systems by applying company and client guidelines.
  • Prepare design sketches, cost estimates, bills of material, and supporting documentation for construction and maintenance projects.
  • Assist with field data collection and interpretation of field notes related to distribution facilities.
  • Support load studies on distribution transformers and assist with investigating circuit overloads and voltage‑related issues.
  • Communicate with landowners or their representatives to support the acquisition of Rights of Way (easements) for proposed utility equipment, including gathering required contact and tax map information.
  • Prepare and submit required reports, documentation, and correspondence.
  • Perform document control and support tasks such as digitizing, copying, and scanning drawings, prints, and maps.
  • Use company and client information systems to track and update design and field activities.
  • Follow all safety requirements and adhere to the company’s Code of Safe Practices.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all seasons and varying weather conditions.
Preferred
  • Experience in utility inspection, utility construction, electric distribution, or utility locating.
  • Exposure to construction practices, distribution engineering concepts, subsurface utility engineering, surveying, or Civil 3D.
Work Environment
  • Combination of field and office‑based work.
  • Regular outdoor work in all seasons.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Des Moines, IA.

Pay And Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $23.00/hr.
