This is a non-merit, internship position. Candidates must follow the instructions in the "To Apply" section. Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.

The Iowa Utilities Commission is seeking to fill an immediate opening for an Engineering internship.

The successful candidate will work directly with the agency's Utility Regulation Engineers in evaluating and analyzing petitions and inspections for electric transmission franchises and natural gas and hazardous liquid pipeline permits. The paid position will include conducting engineering reviews of petitions and associated submitted documents, writing memos and reports, and following docket filings, all under the training and mentorship of IUC engineers.

The position may involve some travel for public informational meetings, public hearings, and inspections concerning electric transmission, electric distribution, and natural gas and hazardous liquid pipelines.

The intern in this position will adhere to all industry safety standards, including those of the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) and Iowa Code.

The length of the internship is negotiable and work hours are flexible, with a full- or part-time schedule possible and the ability to create a work schedule around classes and school breaks.

The applicant should be pursuing a degree from an accredited university in the fields of civil, petroleum, electrical, mechanical, nuclear, or valuation engineering; engineering economics; depreciation engineering; or industrial engineering, i.e., engineering management, operations research, engineering operations, or another engineering-related degree.
