Job Description
The Safety Specialist assists, plans, and implements safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including OSHA, MSHA, and DOT guidelines. This role advises the Safety Director on safety compliance concerns and preventative actions, plans and implements training for employees on worksite safety practices, maintains safety files and records, and conducts safety surveys and inspections.
Responsibilities- Plan and implement safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with OSHA, MSHA, and DOT regulations.
- Advise the Safety Director on safety compliance concerns and preventative actions.
- Conduct training sessions for employees on worksite safety practices.
- Maintain and organize safety files and records.
- Perform safety surveys and inspections regularly.
- Prepare written reports of findings and recommendations for corrective or preventive measures, and follow up to ensure measures are implemented.
- Conduct post-accident investigations and prepare reports identifying possible causes and hazards.
- Accompany personnel to job sites to perform drug tests.
- Assist in the development, evaluation, and upgrading of safety programs.
- Manage inspections of job sites, equipment, and vehicles to ensure safe working conditions.
- At least 3 years of safety-related experience in the construction industry, including experience with OSHA, First Aid/CPR, Confined Spaces, DOT, and/or Excavation safety.
- Experience writing detailed reports and procedures and documenting investigations.
- Experience presenting to and training small groups on safety procedures and regulations.
- Excellent computer and communication skills.
Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in an environmental and/or occupational health and safety related field preferred.
- CHST certification or the ability to obtain within a year preferred.
The role is based in Des Moines at a Data Center location. Some travel may be required a few days out of the month within a two‑hour radius. The work schedule is Monday to Friday, with 10‑hour days. Appropriate work attire includes jeans, work boots, and work‑appropriate t‑shirts or sweatshirts. On‑site, a high visibility vest, glasses, hard hat, gloves, and other safety equipment are provided as needed.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Des Moines, IA.
Pay And BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $80000.00 - $110000.00/hr.
