Job Overview

The Program Manager, UAS supports operational groups utilizing unmanned aerial systems (UAS) across the enterprise. This role advances the strategic development, regulatory compliance, and operational execution of drone programs supporting utility‑scale renewable energy assets. The Program Manager oversees employees and contract resources engaged in UAS operations across the fleet and implements best‑management practices for both current and emerging UAS technologies. The position ensures safe, scalable, and audit‑defensible UAS operations that enhance inspection efficiency, reduce O&M costs, and mitigate operational risk across a multi‑site portfolio.

The Program Manager, UAS is also a certified UAS pilot and performs both on‑site and remote (beyond visual) flight inspections.

Responsibilities
  • Establish effective site‑specific UAS implementation standards, procedures and protocols regarding the operation, maintenance and utilization of UAS in support of BHE Renewables operations.
  • Implement and manage an effective flight permitting and monitoring system to ensure flights meet regulatory, safety and operational expectations.
  • Oversee and conduct drone‑based inspections, including thermal (IR), LiDAR, and visual data capture across utility‑scale sites.
  • Coordinate system‑wide UAS requests and pilot assignments to ensure appropriate usage and regulatory compliance.
  • Direct the effective and standardized use of the UAS program, ensuring consistent data collection and coordinating inspection data analysis with external software partners.
  • Oversee UAS safety and data management, airworthiness and flight operations, providing project and data management support for all UAS programs and activities.
  • Act as BHE Renewables head UAS trainer, developing training, conducting hands‑on training with new pilots and remote flight deck training with seasoned pilots.
  • Collaborate with industry partners to guide development of new technologies, applications and techniques; attend training and industry seminars to assess emerging tools in the utility sector.
  • Perform any additional responsibilities as requested or assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, engineering, sciences, aviation or related field; or equivalent work experience (typically six years of related, progressive work experience for those without a bachelor’s degree).
  • Two years’ experience in management of utility support services or equivalent management experience.
  • FAA Part‑107 license or Part‑61 pilot certification.
  • Effective knowledge of FAA small unmanned aircraft rules (Part 107) and regulations.
  • Effective analytical, problem‑solving and decision‑making skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills, including presentation skills.
  • Project management skills; ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects concurrently.
  • Effective team‑building skills; ability to build consensus through committees and teams.
  • Strong personal computer skills; proficiency in Word, Excel and Access.
  • Valid driver’s license; ability to travel to BHE R & sites as needed.
  • Travel to sites with overnight stays estimated at 25–50%, up to one week at a time.
