Job Description
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is seeking a Wastewater Engineer with technical skills and customer focus to join the Wastewater Engineering team.
Responsibilities- Review construction permit applications and oversee wastewater treatment and collection system infrastructure projects.
- Approve engineering planning reports, antidegradation alternatives analyses, plans and specifications.
- Approve construction permits for non‑funded and CWSRF‑funded projects.
- Provide technical review of facility plans to ensure design basis, state and federal compliance, and siting requirements.
- Coordinate permitting process with cities, consultants, field offices, Waste Load Allocation staff, NPDES staff, and funding agencies.
- Prepare technical comments and variances to assure conformance with standards.
- Manage assigned projects per permitting process manual, using a web‑based tracking system.
- Conduct site visits, inspections, and compile reports.
- Process CWSRF projects including engineering report review and permit issuance.
- Apply state design standards and engineering principles to wastewater treatment and conveyance design.
- Review technical, administrative, and regulatory documents to ensure compliance with permitting rules.
- Conduct detailed technical review and prepare comments.
- Perform complex civil and environmental engineering calculations.
- Accountability, interpersonal skills, high productivity, attention to detail, communication, computer skills, customer focus, integrity, problem solving, project management, self‑management, team player, technical engineering skills.
- Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (preferred Civil or Environmental).
- Related experience or advanced coursework in wastewater/water collection and treatment design or review.
- Valid Iowa Class C driver’s license.
- Minimum Qualification Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Sanitary, Civil, Chemical, Nuclear, Mechanical, Industrial, Agricultural, Biomedical or Public Health Engineering OR licensure as a Professional Engineer by the Iowa Board of Engineering Examiners. - At least six months of experience in Civil, Environmental or Sanitary Engineering per selective requirements.
