Primary Health Care (PHC) was founded in 1981 by Dr. Bery Engebretsen in Des Moines, IA. Our mission has remained unchanged since that time, to provide healthcare and supportive services to all, regardless of insurance, immigration status, or ability to pay.

Based on the needs of the communities we serve, PHC offers a spectrum of medical and dental services including family practice, behavioral health, HIV care and services, and pharmacy. PHC’s Homeless Support Services is the entry point for serving people experiencing homelessness in Polk County. Enabling services are available to help patients with benefits enrollment, case management, transportation, translation, and patient education.

We currently have locations in Ames, Des Moines, & Marshalltown.

What You Will Do
  • Reviews all medications for potential allergies, interactions, duplications, and correct dosing. Enters, verifies, and dispenses medications. Decides upon generic substitutions for prescribed pharmaceuticals.
  • Counsels patients and/or medical practitioners on new prescriptions, drug interactions/contraindications, dosage, and side effects. Communicates other drug and pharmaceutical information as appropriate and answers questions.
  • Manages the acquisition and disbursement of drugs and medications to clinics; performs audits to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Guides and trains certified pharmacy technicians and pharmacy support workers, assisting with their daily tasks.
  • Counts down cash register(s) at the end of each day.
  • Provides diabetic counseling for patients on meter training and insulin training.
  • Assists patients with medication compliance and payment assistance.
  • Maintains compliance with all applicable regulatory bodies. Complies with established departmental policies, procedures, and continuous quality improvement objectives. Follows safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards.
Qualifications You Need to Bring

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from an accredited College of Pharmacy.
  • Experience with and knowledge of pharmacy related software.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail with outstanding degree of accuracy.
  • Strong organizational, prioritization and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a high-volume environment and work independently under minimal supervision.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Strong professional skills with ability to maintain composure in all situations and show empathy.
  • Effective problem-solving skills.
  • Licenses &

    Certifications:

    Current Pharmacist license in the State of Iowa;
    Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers Certification recognized by the American Heart Association;
    Iowa Mandatory Reporter of Child and Dependent Adult Abuse Certification; valid driver’s license.

Preferred:

  • Doctorate degree in Pharmacy from an accredited College of Pharmacy (AAHIVP).
  • Minimum of one year experience directly related to essential functions.
  • Community Health Center experience.
  • Bilingual, verbal and written language proficiency;
    English/Spanish.
  • Familiarity with government regulations and payment systems for 340B pharmacy services.
