Job Description

Title: Substitute Sign Language Interpreter

Department: Student and Family Services

Reports To: Deaf Education Coordinator

Receives Guidance From: Lead Interpreter

Position Inventory: HDSB

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Basic Function: The Substitute Sign Language Interpreter is responsible for sign language interpretation duties in connection with the DMPS Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program & Services and performs related duties as required. The interpreter performs the following key responsibilities using ASL/PSE: interprets spoken and signed language, conveys environmental cues, facilitates communication between deaf and hard of hearing students and others, and assists students as guided by IEP when not interpreting.

The position requires continuous use of independent judgment.

Essential Functions
  • Interpret spoken language and signed language, conveying information about environmental cues.
  • Facilitate communication between deaf and hard of hearing students and others.
  • Use ASL/PSE when interpreting.
  • Assist deaf and hard of hearing students, as guided by IEP, when not interpreting.
Additional Essential Functions (for every DMPS position)
  • Attend work on a prompt and regular basis.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Maintain satisfactory and harmonious working relationships with the public, students, and other employees.
  • Assist with other duties as may be assigned.
Hiring Specifications

Required:

  • A temporary or permanent interpreting license by the state of Iowa.
  • The ability to work with students in kindergarten through high school.
  • The willingness to work at various school sites throughout the district.
  • The ability to obtain transportation to various schools.
  • The ability to exhibit bilingual skills in ASL and English.
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, educators, students, and families.

Desired:

  • Ability to sub on short notice.
