Job Summary
The Director of Field Operations, Controls leads the field operations leadership structure for Controls across three geographically organized regions:
Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, and Kansas City. This role is responsible for building, developing, and leading Regional Field Operations Managers and Commissioning Managers, who oversee technicians' day-to-day work. The Director ensures field leaders and their teams are properly prepared, trained, supported, and aligned to safely execute projects and service work, meet customer and project expectations, and strengthen field execution as the organization continues to mature its regional operating model.
Responsibilities
- Lead Controls field operations, ensuring field leaders and their teams are prepared, trained, and supported to safely and successfully execute projects and service work.
- Build and refine the regional field operations structure across Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, and Kansas City, including manager roles, regional boundaries, leadership routines, and core operating processes.
- Develop and coach Regional Field Operations Managers and the Commissioning Managers as field leaders, with emphasis on accountability, workforce planning, technician development, and consistent execution across regions.
- Promote and protect a safety-first culture in which no schedule, margin, or customer commitment takes priority over technician safety.
- Oversee field execution quality for installation, commissioning, integrated controls, and security solutions, ensuring work consistently meets defined standards and customer expectations.
- Manage workforce capacity, workload, labor forecasting, and resource planning across regions in partnership with field leaders, Customer Care, and other business partners to support project execution, service demands, and efficient deployment of shared field labor.
- Serve as a primary point of contact with union leadership on workforce capacity, technician classifications, apprenticeship pipelines, training programs, and related field labor considerations.
- Monitor field performance, productivity, rework, and quality outcomes; identify root causes and implement continuous improvement actions to strengthen execution and customer satisfaction.
- Develop and maintain structured training, career paths, and skills tracking to support technician growth and visibility into workforce capabilities.
- Establish, maintain, and improve commissioning standards and processes so commissioning is delivered consistently as a core field capability.
- Develop departmental goals, performance metrics, budgets, and operational plans that align Field Operations with business objectives.
- Foster close collaboration across Controls, Customer Care, Service, Sales, Engineering, Project Management, and other business partners to align field resources, schedules, expectations, shared labor needs, and project outcomes.
- Support consistent operation of the Field Advisory Forum, ensuring field concerns are heard, evaluated, and translated into visible improvements where appropriate.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, business, or a related field preferred or equivalent relevant experience.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in controls, building automation, field operations, construction operations, or a closely related technical field.
- Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience managing field operations teams, technicians, supervisors, or other technical personnel.
