Hospital Manager - Des Moines Veterinary Hospital

Des Moines Veterinary Hospital in Des Moines, WA, seeks a Hospital Manager to oversee daily operations, driving revenue and managing costs while fostering a culture of high‑quality patient care and excellent customer service. The role involves managing staff, budgets, compliance, and strategic initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervises the staff within all hospital support departments; achieves and maintains all labor goals.
  • Hires, trains, and manages office and technical clinic support staff, handling new hire paperwork.
  • Orientates and trains new clinic staff to the hospital and duties.
  • Reviews work performance of direct reports, delivers constructive feedback, resolves personnel issues, and discusses with the Regional Manager weekly.
  • Conducts timely performance appraisals.
  • Documents and reports accidents; files appropriate reports.
  • Writes policies/procedures relating to all technical aspects of the hospital and presents for approval.
  • Manages schedules for technical and administrative staff and coordinates the DVM.
  • Monitors Workforce Management for missed punches and manages overtime hours daily.
  • Administers the daily operations.
  • Works with the Pet Vet Care Centers support team to ensure compliance with all administrative responsibilities.
  • Monitors budgets, purchases equipment and supplies, and oversees facility maintenance.
  • Submits contract veterinarian invoices, local vendor invoices, ensures invoice accuracy, and obtains W‑9s from local vendors.
  • Assists in resolving issues with pet owners where appropriate.
  • Reviews revenue, labor, and employee issues with Pet Vet leadership weekly to achieve goals.
  • Ensures daily financial information is accurate and manages all local accounting functions.
  • Oversees inventory management and ensures proper documentation and systems are in place.
  • May establish and oversee billing practices and maintain billing accuracy and charge capturing.
  • May negotiate contracts or insurance provider agreements.
  • Maintains compliance with licensure requirements and displays licenses for DVMs.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Manager.
Qualifications (Required)
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, health science, or related field strongly preferred.
  • Minimum five years of direct office management experience, including at least two years of supervisory experience.
  • Equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and experience may be considered.
  • Strong customer‑service skills; courteous, prompt, and efficient.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel) and organization‑specific software.
  • Ability to establish and maintain productive cooperative relationships.
  • Excellent time‑management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Flexible scheduling, including weekends and holidays.
  • Experience working in environments with sick animals, hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.
  • Ability to work standing, walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling as required.
  • Capability to perform moderate physical tasks, such as lifting or carrying animals up to 50 pounds.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

  • Certified Veterinary Practice Manager (CVPM) or Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) preferred.
