RIVA (Refugee and Immigrant Voices in Action) strengthens Iowa communities by supporting refugee and immigrant families through culturally and linguistically appropriate services. RIVA Ameri Corps members help increase economic self‑sufficiency, foster integration, and build the capacity of local organizations serving newcomers.

THE ROLE

The Community Navigator (Quarter‑Time) provides direct support to refugee and immigrant clients through resource navigation, education, outreach, and data reporting. Members receive training in client intake, case management, and supportive services, and work closely with RIVA staff, Ameri Corps members, volunteers, and community partners to help families access essential resources and achieve their goals.

SERVICE SCHEDULE
  • Monday–Friday, 10:00 AM–7:00 PM, minimum 25 hours/week
  • Occasional evenings and weekends for service activities
  • No service on major federal holidays
  • Sick/personal leave allowed, but hours must still meet term requirements
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES RIVA Ameri Corps Program Activities
  • Participate in RIVA program‑specific training and service days.
  • Attend required Ameri Corps trainings, including Orientation, Monthly Calls, Host Site Visits, Data Collection, and Life After Ameri Corps.
  • Maintain accurate daily data and complete weekly program reports.
  • Communicate and collaborate with staff, Ameri Corps members, volunteers, partner families, and community members.
  • Support member recruitment and provide peer‑to‑peer feedback.
  • Engage in additional allowable activities that help the program meet its goals.
Site‑Specific Member Service Activities
  • Resource Navigation & Client Support
  • Receive training on resource navigation, client intake, case management, and supportive services.
  • Support at least 20 clients in identifying and accessing community resources related to Social Determinants of Health (SDOH).
  • Conduct client intake and collect identification information.
  • Administer RIVA’s pre‑survey to assess needs and set learning goals.
  • Develop individualized service plans within 48 hours of enrollment.
  • Provide supportive services such as housing, food security, employment, healthcare, translation, and referrals.
  • Report each direct service interaction in RIVA’s data tool within 24 hours.
  • Administer post‑surveys within 24 hours of service plan completion.
  • Provide monthly feedback on community resource accessibility.
  • Create a program sustainability binder with materials and impact data during the final month.
  • Community Outreach & Events
  • Support the local RIVA Summer Job Fair:
  • Conduct multilingual outreach and secure at least 10 client participants by May 15.
  • Provide interpretation, translation, and documentation support.
  • Recruit at least 2 unduplicated volunteers and track hours within 24 hours.
  • Assist with event setup, cleanup, and post‑event feedback.
  • Recruit and manage volunteers in alignment with RIVA and host‑site policies.
  • Ensure volunteers do not participate in prohibited activities.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma/GED or working toward completion
  • At least 17 years old at the start of service
  • U.S. citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident
  • Able to pass the National Service Criminal History Check
