Description:
The Registered Nurse (RN) in our Family Medicine Clinic plays a vital role in delivering high‑quality, holistic patient care. Working collaboratively with physicians, advanced practice providers, medical assistants, and administrative staff, the RN is responsible for a wide range of clinical and administrative duties that support the efficient and effective operation of the clinic. This role requires a strong understanding of primary care principles, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to patient education and advocacy.
Key Responsibilities- Patient Care & Assessment:
- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including vital signs, medical history, and current symptoms, accurately documenting findings in the electronic health record (EHR).
- Assist providers with examinations, procedures, and treatments.
- Administer medications safely and accurately via various routes (e.g., oral, intramuscular, subcutaneous, intravenous), ensuring proper dosage and patient identification.
- Perform wound care, staple/suture removal, ear irrigation, and other clinical procedures as ordered by the provider.
- Provide patient education on diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, preventative care, and health promotion.
- Triage patient calls and walk‑ins, assessing urgency and directing to appropriate care.
- Clinic Operations & Management:
- Prepare examination rooms, ensuring they are clean, stocked, and ready for patient care.
- Manage and prioritize provider schedules, ensuring timely patient flow.
- Coordinate referrals to specialists and ancillary services, ensuring all necessary documentation is complete.
- Process and manage prescription refill requests in accordance with clinic protocols.
- Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date patient records in the EHR, ensuring compliance with HIPAA and other regulatory guidelines.
- Assist with inventory management of medical supplies and equipment.
- Communication &
Collaboration: - Communicate effectively and professionally with patients, families, providers, and all members of the healthcare team.
- Collaborate with providers to develop and implement individualized care plans.
- Participate in team meetings and huddles to discuss patient care and clinic operations.
- Serve as a resource for medical assistants and other support staff.
- Quality & Safety:
- Adhere to all clinic policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Maintain a safe and clean clinical environment.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and clinic efficiency.
- Stay current with nursing best practices, regulations, and advancements in family medicine.
- Education: Graduate of an accredited Registered Nurse (RN) program. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Licensure: Current, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Iowa.
- Skills:
- Proficient in electronic health record (EHR) systems (specify if there's a particular one, e.g., "Epic," "Athena One," etc.).
- Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively in a fast‑paced environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills with a patient‑centered approach.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required. ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support) preferred.
