Job Overview
Mercy One Central Iowa is a leading hospital in the Des Moines metro area. The Mercy One Des Moines Neurosurgery department offers comprehensive neurosurgery services and seeks a Clinic RN to support outpatient patient care.
Employment Type& Shift
Full time. Day Shift, 40 hours per week.
Schedule:
Monday–Thursday 8:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.;
Friday 8:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.; no weekends or holidays.
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate evidence-based patient care in outpatient settings.
- Coordinate care with other clinical staff and support patient and family education.
- Communicate across healthcare teams and document clinical standards.
- Perform comprehensive patient assessments (physical, psychosocial, nutritional, functional, safety, spiritual, cultural, educational).
- Administer medications and treatments safely via oral, IM, SC, IV, inhalation, topical, ocular, sublingual, and nasal routes and document accordingly.
- Perform nursing care, lab and diagnostic tests, specimen collection, phlebotomy, and limited radiology procedures.
- Assist providers with patient care, phone/mail/fax communications, scheduling, consents, admissions, referrals, and outpatient procedures.
- Educate patients, families, and clinical staff on treatments, medications, test preparation, discharge, and health maintenance; document education and evaluate understanding.
- Participate in staff meetings, committees, quality improvement, risk management, and performance improvement projects.
- Maintain accurate and complete documentation in EMR including assessments, vitals, symptoms, treatments, medications, education, labs, histories, and consults.
- Maintain and monitor supplies, equipment, medication stock, and office machines; report malfunctions.
- Recognize and respond to urgent/emergency patient needs and initiate emergency procedures.
- Perform other duties as needed and assigned by the manager.
- Active RN license in the state of Iowa (other state licensure acceptable; Compact State License valid where applicable).
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 3 months of hire.
- Mandatory reporter abuse training certification within 3 months of hire.
- Proficiency in basic computer skills (Windows, web-based navigation, email, MS Office).
- Ability to work with diverse groups of people in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.
- Read, write, and understand English; communicate effectively with patients, visitors, and colleagues.
- Completion of specialty classes or proof of other certifications required for some roles.
- Demonstrate personal presence marked by honesty, integrity, and caring, and ability to inspire and motivate others.
