Nurse Practitioner (NP) - Department Of Pain Medicine

Broadlawns Medical Center is seeking a compassionate, collaborative, and highly motivated Nurse Practitioner (NP) to join our growing Department of Pain Medicine. This provider will serve as a primary clinician for medication management, caring for a diverse patient population with complex chronic pain conditions and multifaceted medical histories. The ideal candidate will practice evidence-based pain management, prioritize patient safety, and work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to deliver comprehensive, patient-centered care.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary provider for medication management of patients with acute and chronic pain conditions.
  • Evaluate new patients and develop individualized, evidence-based treatment plans in collaboration with the interdisciplinary pain management team.
  • Manage opioid and non-opioid analgesic therapies while adhering to federal, state, and institutional prescribing guidelines.
  • Maintain and update annual controlled substance/pain management agreements.
  • Perform routine monthly monitoring of the Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP/PDMP) in accordance with clinic policies.
  • Provide ongoing opioid risk assessment and risk stratification utilizing validated screening tools and clinical judgment.
  • Order, interpret, and maintain appropriate urine drug testing and other monitoring measures to promote safe prescribing practices.
  • Monitor patients for medication effectiveness, adverse effects, compliance, and opportunities to optimize therapy.
  • Perform low-risk office-based procedures, including but not limited to trigger point injections and bursa injections, as credentialed.
  • Provide follow-up care for patients undergoing interventional pain procedures performed by interventional pain medicine physicians.
  • Educate patients and families regarding pain conditions, treatment options, medication safety, and realistic treatment expectations.
  • Document patient encounters accurately and thoroughly within the electronic medical record.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and support the continued growth and development of the Pain Medicine program.
  • Attend and actively participate in monthly provider meetings, multidisciplinary case conferences, and morbidity and mortality discussions.
  • Support departmental goals and organizational initiatives established by Broadlawns Medical Center.
  • Foster a positive, respectful, and collaborative work environment through effective communication with physicians, advanced practice providers, nursing staff, medical assistants, and ancillary departments.
  • Demonstrates flexibility to adapt to changes in workload, schedule, department function and procedures.
  • Participates actively in creating a positive and harmonious work environment.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Current licensure as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) in the State of Iowa or eligibility for Iowa licensure.
  • National board certification as a Nurse Practitioner.
  • Current DEA registration and authority to prescribe controlled substances.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic, and patient education skills.
  • Preferred experience in pain management, family medicine, internal medicine, physical medicine and rehabilitation, palliative care, anesthesia, or related specialty.
  • Experience preferred in managing controlled substances and chronic opioid therapy.
