HVAC Technician – Des Moines, Iowa

Job

Day Shift. Pay range: $38‑42 per hour. Shift: 7am/8am‑3pm/4pm, Monday‑Friday. Open to overtime and on‑call duties with pay. Process may take up to 3 weeks.

Overview

Company is currently hiring for an HVAC Technician at its Des Moines, Iowa campus. The role will install, operate, maintain, and repair campus facility equipment essential to building operations, including HVAC, boilers, chillers, and fans. The position ensures systems run efficiently, safely, and in compliance with applicable codes and regulations, and supports leadership in contractor management.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure safe and efficient operation of HVAC units, boilers, chillers, fans, and pumps.
  • Use Siemens & Trane Building Automation Systems (BAS) to monitor HVAC systems, respond to alarms, and adjust settings to optimize efficiency and performance.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
  • Respond promptly to equipment failures, power outages, or building emergencies.
  • Diagnose and resolve equipment issues quickly to minimize downtime.
  • Document repair activities and ensure long‑term fixes are implemented.
  • Perform general facility maintenance, including plumbing, electrical, and lighting.
  • Assist in training junior staff members as needed.
  • Maintain inventory to support continuous operation and preventative maintenance.
  • Schedule and manage third‑party vendors for larger projects or compliance needs.
  • Ensure vendor activities meet budget requirements.
  • Keep accurate daily logs of equipment status, repairs, inspections, and maintenance records.
  • Adhere to OSHA, safety, and environmental regulations to maintain legal compliance.
  • Report issues, updates, and completed work to supervisors or building management.
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma with 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and regulations in the HVAC industry.
  • Ability to service and repair 25‑Ton+ equipment, including RTUs, splits, chillers, VRF, and boilers.
  • Completed advanced training beyond high school, including technical coursework.
  • Strong knowledge of boiler systems, HVAC, electrical, and plumbing.
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable codes and regulations pertaining to assigned equipment and operations.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Ability to interact well in a team environment.
  • Good written and oral communication skills; basic understanding of English, both written and oral.
  • Advanced computer skills (e.g., software, building automation, and Microsoft Office).
