About the Position:
Under the supervision of the Water Distribution Supervisor, performs heavy manual labor duties to assist in the preparation of excavations, installation and repairs of water mains and related components. Is on call on a rotational basis a week at a time for emergency repair work as required.

Examples of Essential Job Functions
  • Makes taps, installs and connects mains, services, fire hydrants, and valves according to construction drawings using hand tools, equipment, and material as required.
  • Makes excavations and removes pavement with hydraulic, air, and hand tools in order to place pipe, fittings, fire hydrants, valves, and other related distribution system components. Completes excavation by back filling and tamping, pours and spreads concrete, dirt, and or sand. Cleans up work area, removes debris, gathers, cleans, and loads tools.
  • Repairs broken mains and other related components under routine or emergency conditions and restores area to original condition, using various hand tools.
  • Sets up and monitors barricades and other traffic control devices at the job site according to city and state specifications to properly ensure safety in the working environment and for the public.
  • Operates company vehicles, dump trucks and other work equipment as required.
  • Visually and manually inspects all fire hydrants and blow offs in the distribution system to ensure proper operation.
  • Locates, inspects, and adjusts valve boxes to ensure valves can be operated.
  • Coordinates water outages with customers and work teams.
  • Performs other duties of similar nature.
Qualifications

Education:

High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience:

One year of experience as a physical laborer or in construction field. An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform essential duties of the job may be acceptable.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • A valid Iowa Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brakes within 90 calendar days of appointment and a good driving record.
  • This position requires Driver remain insurable under the Company's coverage.

Age:
Must be at least 21 years old for this position.

Physical Requirements:

Frequently lifts up to 50 pounds

Working Conditions:

Frequently works in outdoor environments, street environments, or construction site. Frequently works in adverse weather conditions. Occasionally works in confined space.
