CLASSIFICATION: Transportation Routing Specialist

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Education: High School Diploma, HiSET, or G.E.D.
  • Work Experience: Three years of progressively responsible experience in routing, transportation or logistics, including at least three years of supervisory experience
  • Licensure or Certification: Commercial Driver's License or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholder groups, including colleagues and the public.
  • Effective written and oral communication.
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to student transportation.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to read and navigate mapping software.
  • Ability to coach and motivate assigned staff.
  • Maintain valid driver's license with a driving record that aligns with the district's motor vehicle record requirement while employed.

  • JOB SUMMARY:

    The Transportation Routing Specialist plans, schedules, and manages district routes to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective service for all students. Optimize routing strategies for out-of-boundary assignments. Partner with district personnel to align transportation operations and departmental goals and service standards. The essential functions as shown below represent only the key areas of responsibility; specific position requirements will vary depending on the needs of the district.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Develop, design, and coordinate bus routes utilizing district routing software. Communicate any routing changes to bus drivers, school administrators, and staff.
  • Utilize and maintain databases housing student, boundary, and transportation information.
  • Assess and analyze changes in student distribution, zoning, and operational conditions to optimize bus routes, including modifying, splitting, or reallocating routes and resources to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant transportation services.
  • Evaluate and determine responses to special transportation requests, including stop locations, ridership capacity, and service availability, to ensure appropriate and efficient service delivery. Communicate all essential information to bus drivers and school administration.
  • Coordinate with department staff to ensure that routes and trips are adequately staffed and equipment is available.
  • Supervise, monitor and provide written evaluation for assigned drivers and associates. Communicate any time changes with the payroll department.
  • Respond to parent and public complaints; address concerns related to student transportation, routes, and scheduling.
  • Drive bus routes and trips as needed to address staffing shortages, and ride with drivers to troubleshoot routing issues, resolve concerns, and support mapping adjustments.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge through professional seminars, training programs, and collaboration.

    Occasional: Standing, Walking, Bending/Stooping, Reaching/Pushing/Pulling, Climbing Stairs, Driving, Lifting (100 lbs) Carrying (40 Feet)

    Working Conditions: Frequent Inside, Occasional Outside, Occasional Extremes of Temperature/Humidity.
