The purpose of the position is to complete a variety of tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, sidewalks, and storm drains. This is accomplished by constructing or maintaining streets, alleyways, sidewalks, and storm drains; completing repairs; removing debris and trimming trees; and maintaining vehicles and equipment. Other duties may include related tasks which contribute to the upkeep and care of streets, alleys, and right-of-ways.

  • Duties are included as follows:
    Pours, spreads and levels concrete; sets forms, ties steel, wrecks forms, backfills, places, spreads and compacts asphalt: lays sod; uses various concrete finishing tools; bores holes in existing concrete to install rebar; repairs sprinkler systems damaged by crews; cleans up work site, materials and unused concrete; clean tools of concrete; hauls old spoils to designated dump site; watches for buried utility lines during excavation;

    sands icy roads in the winter; lifts and carries objects such as cement bags, small equipment, tampers, water pumps, and jackhammer weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Assists with performing a wide variety of activities in support of maintenance, which includes: repairing inlet boxes, storm pipes, flumes, head walls, culverts, and bar ditches; grading alleys; pressure washing screening walls for painting; installing and repairing guardrails and dome posts; maintaining bridges for structural integrity;
    Right of Way tree trimming drainage clearing and cleaning and/or, performing other related activities.
  • Ensures site safety by directing traffic flow, placing and removing traffic cones, placing and removing barricades, and routing traffic as appropriate.
  • Maintains drivable streets and alleyways by sweeping streets and removing debris; removing downed trees and other large objects; trimming trees; hauling and placing sand on roads; and ensuring proper drainage.
  • Participates in/on a variety of meetings and training sessions. Responds to emergency operations and on-call situations. May be required to work special events after regularly scheduled hours, including holidays and weekends.
  • Maintains vehicles by checking fluids; stocking vehicles with equipment, materials, and supplies; and reporting maintenance or repair needs.
  • Performs other assigned duties.
  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • No experience required; related maintenance and/or construction experience preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s License. Must have and maintain a good driving record in accordance with the driving standards as established by the City of DeSoto. Must report all traffic citations to his/her departmental Director or Manager within two working days of receipt.
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License Class “B” Preferred
  • Must reside within a 30-minute response time from the City of DeSoto Service Center. Employee will be required to carry first-call or back-up call after completion of 6-month probation period or when assigned.
  • Knowledge of City policies and procedures;
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, and techniques used in the construction and maintenance of streets, roadways, alleys, and right-of-ways;
  • Knowledge of standard safety practices, work gear, and procedures;
  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools, including chainsaws;
  • Skill in the operation of light and heavy equipment, including bobcats, backhoes, and front-end loaders;
  • Skill in communicating effectively both orally and in writing;
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including callback, and
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with City administration, other employees, and the general public.
