This position exists to promote public roadway safety by the administration of prescribed vision screening, knowledge, oral, road and skills tests for motor vehicle operators so that only qualified individuals obtain a Minnesota driver's license.
The Department of Public Safety is unable to provide sponsorship for work visas. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States at the start of employment. DPS does not participate in E-Verify.
Minimum Qualifications
- Oral, written, and customer service communication skills sufficient to effectively communicate complex information to a wide variety of audiences and meet expectations and requirements of staff and customers
- Customer service and interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with a variety of individuals, groups, and issues
- Cashiering and math skill to perform basic math to collect, count, reconcile and complete daily transactions
- Experience providing customer service in a high volume, stressful environment
- Typing-Keyboarding skills sufficient to enter data accurately into a computer
- Must have and maintain an unrestricted driver's license
- Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather
- Ability to work cooperatively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and underserved communities
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of driving and motor vehicle laws
- Ability to negotiate, resolve issues, read situations and settle disputes for in person interactions
- Face-to-face customer service experience in a business with high volume customer traffic within the last five (5) years
- Ability to problem solve, prioritize and manage a wide variety of duties while working independently
- Knowledge of a written and spoken second language (e.g., Spanish, Hmong or Somali) and English sufficient to translate messages from one language to the other, while maintaining message content, context and style
Physical Requirements
Requires occasionally moving and transporting such articles as file boxes and heavy hand tools or heavier materials with help from others, and moving and transporting light objects frequently. Even though the weights being moved and transported may be a negligible amount, a job in this category may require positioning self to move to a significant degree (in vehicles) or may involve maintaining a stationary position for extended periods.
