Miller Johnson, one of Michigan’s largest full-service law firms, is seeking an experienced full-time Legal Administrative Assistant (LAA) to support our rapidly growing practice. As a LAA you will be a proactive case partner to timekeepers, owning the administrative workflow that supports the efficient delivery of legal services within the Practice Group. This role drives the day-to-day administrative coordination of client and matter activity ensuring deadlines are met, documentation is accurate, and operations run smoothly.

You will serve as a central point of organization and follow-through consistently anticipating needs, managing competing priorities, and ensuring continuity of support for timekeepers.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions
  • Coordinates calendars for assigned timekeepers, ensuring internal & external deadlines, meetings, and key milestones are accurately tracked and proactively managed.
  • Monitors and coordinates task flow to ensure matters progress efficiently and accurately.
  • Partners with assigned timekeepers to prioritize workload and manage shifting deadlines.
  • Manages client intake, matter opening, and billing support functions with attention to detail and timeliness.
  • Prepares, edits, proofreads, and assembles legal documents and correspondence with a high degree of accuracy and professionalism.
  • Maintains organized physical and electronic case files in accordance with the Firm’s document management standards.
  • Serves as a professional point of contact for clients, opposing counsel, and internal stakeholders.
  • Oversees formatting and drafting legal documents.
  • Manages incoming and outgoing mail for assigned timekeepers.
  • Coordinates travel arrangements and logistical needs for assigned timekeepers.
  • Actively participates in team-based coverage, ensuring continuity of support during absences or peak workload periods.
  • Shares knowledge and supports process consistency across the legal support team and practice area.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of 2 years administrative experience supporting multiple timekeepers (attorneys or paralegals), or practice group/firm operations required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suites (including Outlook, Word, and Excel) required
  • Proficiency in Net Docs or other document management systems required
  • Proficiency with Literia NTD or other automated document formatting systems preferred
  • Proficiency with LMS accounting software for time entry and billing preferred
  • Proficiency with state and federal court filing systems, including MiFile and PACER

  • Demonstrates personal responsibility for managing workflows, meeting deadlines, and ensuring matters move forward accurately and efficiently.
  • Communicates openly and professionally with attorneys, team members, and clients. Handles confidential information with discretion and exercises sound judgment.
  • Maintains composure and effectiveness in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Demonstrates resilience and flexibility when priorities shift.
  • Produces high-quality, detail-oriented work. Proactively reviews documents for accuracy and completeness before submission.
  • Understands how administrative support contributes to client service and matter outcomes. Anticipates needs and identifies opportunities to improve efficiency and workflow.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of district, circuit, and federal court filing procedures.
  • Collaborates respectfully with team members, participates in coverage planning, and contributes to a supportive team environment.
  • Working knowledge of billing timelines and matter life cycles.
