The Senior Customs Expert is responsible for leading regional customs strategy and ensuring full compliance with U.S. and Canadian trade regulations. This role plays a critical part in managing customs operations, mitigating risk, improving processes, and supporting internal and external stakeholders across the supply chain.
Key Responsibilities- Develop, implement, and manage regional customs and trade compliance strategies.
- Ensure timely and compliant clearance of shipments.
- Act as the primary escalation point for day-to-day customs broker issues.
- Lead initiatives to improve customs reconciliation processes.
- Own and manage Importer Security Filing (ISF) processes.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate risks related to new or evolving trade and customs topics.
- Oversee supplier solicitation and qualification processes related to customs and trade compliance.
- Manage and resolve supplier escalations.
- Drive improvements in duty avoidance programs and respond to customer-related customs requests.
- Manage and respond to CBP penalties, notices, and information requests.
- Support and coordinate government audits and inspections.
- Ensure ongoing compliance with all applicable customs laws and regulations.
- Deliver internal training on free trade agreements and customs-related topics.
- Manage customs systems and accounts, including ACE and CARM.
- Prepare and present quarterly KPI and performance reports.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in customs and trade management.
- Bachelor’s degree preferred in Logistics, International Trade, or a related discipline
- (15+ years of direct experience in customs or international trade may be considered in lieu of a degree)
- Professional certification in customs, trade, or a related field is preferred.
- Strong, hands-on knowledge of U.S. and Canadian customs regulations.
- In-depth understanding of free trade agreements.
- Proven experience in project management and process optimization.
- Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Ability to engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while managing multiple priorities.
- Willingness to travel to other sites as required.
