Position — Construction Lead Technician Work locations:

Participate in a full range of duties associated with construction field inspection and project documentation for construction of highways, bridges, and transportation facilities using MDOT’s paperless construction process (e-construction). The Construction Technician will inspect the work of contractors and assist in the coordination of surveying and testing needs on infrastructure projects for MDOT, Counties, Cities, and private agencies or owners. Additionally, perform engineering technical support activities, including materials testing, inspection, and compliance.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Provide staff leadership (for up to 3 employees) on project and sole point of contact for project engineer/assistant
- Make certain contractor operations are covered on a daily basis
- Review employee Daily Work Reports (DWRs) for completeness and accuracy related to quantities and comments.
- Assist with office technician related duties.
- Coordinate upcoming job activities with the contractor to anticipate and plan for staff changes to match the workload of the inspectors. Discuss with project engineer/assistant on recommendations and contact staff if necessary.
- Provide mentorship to new hires and/or younger inspectors
- Assist with specific marketing tasks related to future work and industry changes
- Communicate effectively with the contractor, client, GLEG staff and any other member of the project stakeholders
- Willingness to work extended hours including possible night and weekends, depending on projects
- Understand plans with a minimal amount of guidance from more senior level staff
- Complete Daily Work Reports (DWRs) that documents contractor work activities. DWRs are to be submitted timely including all work being completed on the project, comments on traffic control for operation, material testing details, etc.
- Generate computations that provide support to pay items included on DWRs
- Provide guidance and examples of proper DWR composition and inspection techniques to inspectors as needed
- Monitor inspectors’ reports of “force account items” to insure complete and accurate details and that a contractor’s representative signs each day’s report
- Provide details to help prepare work orders and directions to the contractor with the Assistant Project Engineer
- Inspect the entire project with a daily “drive-through” to have a handle on progress, problems, and successes
- 5-10 years (MDOT experience preferred)
- Associates in a Construction Management/Civil Engineering related field
- Proficient with MDOT documentation requirements including AASHTOware Project and/or Field Manager/Field Book software
- Proficient in the use of electronic devices including a personal laptop computer and smart phone
- Proficient with Microsoft Office software, including Excel, Outlook, and Word
- Completion of various MDOT construction and/or materials testing training/certification is a plus including but not limited to: MCA/ACI Concrete Testing Level 1, Aggregate Inspection Level 1, Construction Storm Water Operator
High School Diploma & possession of valid driver’s license with good driving record
