Field Project Engineer

Job Description

The Field Project Engineer will work 100% onsite to support the project team with day-to-day activities on a ground-up K-12 school construction project in Detroit. This role focuses on field coordination, subcontractor support, and construction administration, with extensive exposure to site operations, documentation, and project closeout. The position offers strong potential to transition into a long-term direct role based on performance and provides significant hands-on learning, ownership interaction, and professional development within a collaborative team environment.

Responsibilities

* Support the Superintendent and Project Engineer with daily site activities on a ground-up K-12 school project.

* Assist with field coordination and oversee aspects of site operations to help keep work progressing according to plan.

* Support subcontractor management by coordinating with trades, tracking progress, and helping resolve field issues.

* Create, submit, and manage Requests for Information (RFIs) to clarify design and construction questions.

* Assist with the preparation, tracking, and documentation of change orders.

* Manage and track punch list items, including coordinating with trades to review, correct, and close out all outstanding items.

* Support project closeout activities, ensuring all documentation, punch lists, and final inspections are completed accurately and on time.

* Assist with construction administration tasks such as documentation, reporting, and updating stakeholders on project status.

* Coordinate and support inspections, schedule walkthroughs, and help ensure timely resolution of inspection-related issues.

* Work closely with project teams, owner representatives, and inspectors to maintain clear communication and alignment on project goals.

* Communicate field issues and recommendations clearly to the project team and stakeholders.

* Maintain organized project records, including RFIs, change orders, punch lists, and other site documentation.

* Support adherence to construction sequencing and onsite safety expectations through effective coordination and communication.

Essential Skills

* Strong field engineering experience with emphasis on construction punch list management.

* Experience coordinating with trades to review, correct, and close out punch list items.

* Ability to work closely with project teams, owner representatives, and inspectors.

* Proficiency in creating, submitting, and managing RFIs.

* Experience supporting inspections, scheduling walkthroughs, and resolving field issues.

* Background in construction management, commercial construction, and ground-up vertical construction.

* Experience in subcontractor management, project coordination, and construction administration.

* Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly convey field issues and recommendations.

* Strong organizational skills and competence in documentation, reporting, and stakeholder updates.

* Working knowledge of construction sequencing and onsite safety expectations.

* Background supporting cost teams with review of out-of-scope items.

* Previous experience working with general contractors or construction management firms.

* Experience mentoring or collaborating within a team of Assistant Project Managers (APMs) and Project Engineers (PEs).

* Interest in long-term career growth within field and project engineering roles.

* Motivation to learn in a hands-on, fast-paced construction environment with frequent ownership interaction.

Work Environment

This role is 100% onsite at a K-12 school construction project in Detroit within a fast-paced commercial construction environment.
