The Modern Ancient Brown Foundation (MABF) is based in Detroit, Michigan. The foundation's core program seeks to support scholars, artists, and writers who identify as members of historically marginalized groups—specifically queer, Black, Indigenous, and people of color.

This program is specifically designed for recent bachelor's and M.F.A. graduates seeking to develop their studio practice in dialogue with Critical Studies. In the Fall of 2026 and Spring of 2027, up to two residents at a time will be selected to share a massive 1,000 sq ft studio space in Detroit. Residents are expected to utilize this time to deeply explore their medium, participate in critique sessions centered around their work, and engage with the broader Detroit arts community.

  • Workspace: A shared 1,000 sq ft studio space in Detroit.
  • Funding: A monthly materials stipend, plus a housing stipend comparable to the median rent in Detroit (for those not already based in the city).
  • Mentorship & Publication: Participation in formal crits, mentoring, dinner conversations, and the opportunity to be published in the Foundation's annual publication.

Application Requirements :

All materials must be condensed into a single PDF document and submitted via Slide Room. The PDF must include:

  • CV.
  • Portfolio: Up to 15 images of your work in chronological order (including title, medium, size, and date).
  • Statement of

    Purpose:

    500–750 words outlining your life history, artistic interests, critical relationship to your field, and why you are applying now.
  • Budget: A brief outline of your projected per diem, materials costs, and housing.
  • References: Names and email addresses of two references (do not send letters).
