Description

The University of Detroit Mercy’s Simulation Technology and Research (STAR) Center, located within the College of Health Professions, invites applications for a part‑time position (12 months/year). The position seeks a highly motivated educator to enhance student’s learning experience with hands‑on simulated activities and promote consistent positive outcomes.

The Simulation Education Specialist collaborates with faculty to facilitate various simulation activities, consult on research projects, conduct needs assessments, and design and implement evidence‑based simulation experiences. This role enhances healthcare education through the innovative use of simulation methodologies. The specialist bridges the gap between theory and practice across multidisciplinary programs.

Compensation is based on the level and requirements of the role and is determined by education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and abilities.

Position Summary

The University of Detroit Mercy’s Simulation Technology and Research (STAR) Center, located within the College of Health Professions, invites applications for a part‑time position (12 months/year). The position seeks a highly motivated educator to enhance student’s learning experience with hands‑on simulated activities and promote consistent positive outcomes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Simulation Integration
  • Manages and evaluates the facilitation process of simulation experiences on Blackboard, including scenario pre‑learning, pre‑briefing, debriefing, student reflections, and student evaluation data.
  • Facilitation, operation, and debriefing of simulation scenarios to maximize learning.
  • Collaborates with program directors to design simulation scenarios that reflect real‑world clinical challenges.
  • Collaborates with program directors to develop assessment tools to measure student performance and identify areas for remediation.
  • Collaborates with program directors and simulation tech to coordinate simulation schedules and events.
Faculty and Learner Support
  • Provides orientation of the simulation center and equipment to novice faculty and learners.
  • Set up and strike down simulation and clinical skills activities, ensuring all equipment and supplies are available.
  • Collaborates with the simulation tech to develop instructional materials for setting up and using task trainer models, manikins, and equipment.
  • Maintains knowledge of standards of best simulation practices, hospital and community policies, and program accreditation requirements.
  • Ensure simulations align with national accreditation standards and competency requirements.
Event Participation and Promotion
  • Participates and assists in STAR events (open house, orientation, accepted student day, simulation week, community events).
  • Leads tours of the STAR center for various groups and organizations.
  • Assists the STAR director with data, research activities, and other duties as needed.
Requirements

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education
    -Bachelor degree in Nursing.
  • Experience
    -Two years to five years (Equivalent combination of education and employment).
Preferred Qualifications Education
  • Preferred:
    Master’s degree in Nursing, healthcare, or related discipline.
Work Experience
  • Preferred:
    Experience in patient simulation services and technologies.
Special Note
  • Preferred Qualifications:

    Preference will be given to candidates with a record of commitment to teaching in an educational or clinical setting.
Physical Requirements

Job may require lifting light weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average weight objects (1 to 10 pounds).

Work Environment

Conditions are those of a typical office, classroom, healthcare environment, requiring frequent oral and written communication with college employees, students, and vendors, the presentation of information on‑line and in face‑to‑face settings, and the ability to enter data and written communications in electronic format in a timely manner. The ability to be generally and continuously aware of the safe and appropriate operation of the lab equipment and material is essential.
