In accordance with the Agreement between Detroit Federation of Teachers (DFT) and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced.

Position Summary

We are seeking a candidate who possesses the drive to initiate creativity and an inspiring learning environment for students. The ASL teacher offers rigorous curriculum aligned with the State of Michigan Common Core guidelines while upholding the mission, vision and values of the Detroit Public Schools Community District. The American Sign Language (ASL) teacher will instruct students from K-8th grade on the importance of developing ASL skills to communicate more effectively with individuals who are deaf i.e. educators, parents, community and peers.

Evaluates and monitors students' progress on a periodic basis.

Minimum Qualifications

Possess a bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools or an equivalent agency.
Successful candidates who possess degrees beyond a bachelor's degree will be eligible for the appropriate salary differential.
Must possess a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate or Michigan Temporary Teaching Authorization (T2EA), American Sign Language (FS) endorsement, Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SL) AND able to demonstrate an ASL proficiency level of Intermediate Plus or higher on the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI), or Full-Year Permit.
Must possess valid Michigan Teaching Certificate and appropriate endorsement.
Must possess the American Sign Language endorsement (FS) as a current ASL endorsed teacher may teacher of ASL as a world language.
A teacher currently certified and endorsed with Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SL) AND able to demonstrate an ASL proficiency level of Intermediate Plus or higher on the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) or 3 or higher on the American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI), may teach ASL as a world language.

Essential Functions

Cooperate and collaborate with teachers, parents and community members.

Enable field studies/opportunities to improve classroom curriculum per the needs of students.

Develop parent and family involvement in school life and curriculum to increase understanding of ASL and the culture of the Deaf community.

Synthesize with colleagues on school activities to ensure academic success and opportunities for students to utilize learned skills.

Discuss with parents on student progress and academic achievements.

Instruct rules of conduct and ensure classroom, campus, and uniform discipline policies.

Counsel students during academic and adjustment problems by taking corrective measures to enhance student learning abilities.

Plan study programs to meet students
¿ needs, interests and abilities.

Provide creative assessments to evaluate students
¿ progress in ASL knowledge, grammar rules, vocabulary skills and mastery on a periodic basis.

Maintain accurate attendance, progress reports and grade records. Prepare reports as needed.

Instruct students on proper use of equipment, materials, textbooks, etc.

Develop and maintain inventory of instructional materials, aids and equipment.

Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor/building administrator
