Special Education Teacher of Students with Autism - Elementary Level (K-5)

Compensation will be based on the applicable provisions of the BEA Teacher Salary Schedule.
Position Summary:
Deliver instruction to elementary students with Autism in accordance with their Individualized Education Plan.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Minimum:
Bachelor's Degree in Education. - Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with an endorsement in Autism (preferred).
- Other Special Education endorsements will also be considered.
- Background in child development with special emphasis on language, communication and cognitive development.
- Understanding of ABA and behavioral intervention techniques.
- Ability to develop curriculum with special emphasis on personal adjustment and differentiation.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Prior ASD teaching experience preferred.
- START training preferred.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide age-related curriculum and instruction fostering students academic, social and life planning skills.
- Provide individual and small group instructional support to students in areas such as following a schedule, becoming a responsible learner, and dealing effectively with interpersonal relationships.
- Prepare lesson materials, supplies and equipment.
- Monitor student behavior both inside and outside of the classroom.
- Development and implementation of IEPs.
- Conduct ongoing progress monitoring of IEP goals and objectives.
- Ability to work collaboratively with the school's ASD Team.
- Assist families in strengthening their skills by providing individual assistance, facilitating time-limited support groups, and facilitating attendance at district-wide parenting seminars.
- Develop and implement effective strategies to increase family involvement within the school.
- Provide information to families regarding appropriate community agencies and resources.
- Participate in educational planning team meetings and provide pre-referral consultation and assessment as appropriate.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
