Special Education Coordinator

Berkley Schools is seeking a dynamic and experienced Special Education Coordinator to join our leadership team. The Special Education Coordinator plays a critical administrative role in overseeing the implementation of special education programs and Section 504, ensuring compliance with state and federal laws, supporting staff development, and promoting inclusive practices across the district. This position is ideal for an instructional leader with a strong background in special education and a passion for equity, collaboration, and systems-level support for students with disabilities.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Special Education, Educational Leadership, or related field required
  • Valid state administrative certification (e.g., School Administrator, Supervisor of Special Education) preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in special education (teaching, consulting, or administrative experience)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of IDEA, FAPE, LRE, and MTSS
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience working with diverse student populations and promoting equity in education

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and support to special education teachers, related service providers, paraprofessionals, and building administrators.
  • Ensure compliance with IDEA, Section 504, and state-specific regulations regarding special education services.
  • Oversee the Extended School Year (ESY) program, assists staff/provides PL on qualification areas, helps to gather and analyze data, summer staffing
  • Support the development, implementation, and monitoring of IEPs and behavior intervention plans (BIPs).
  • Coordinate and lead IEP meetings, especially for complex cases.
  • Conducts random IEP compliance reviews
  • Analyze data to monitor student progress and program effectiveness; make informed recommendations for improvement.
  • Oversees/reviews/attends initial elementary 504 meetings. Develops a consistent process for initial 504s.
  • Assist in the continued development of a strong Secondary MTSS system
  • Supports building paras by providing coaching and Professional Learning
  • Serve as a liaison between schools, families, community agencies, and the district office.
  • Assist in hiring, mentoring, and evaluating special education staff as appropriate.
  • Facilitate professional development and training related to special education laws, instructional strategies, and inclusive practices.
  • Collaborate with general education leadership to promote a continuum of services in the least restrictive environment.
