Job Description

Comstock Park is seeking candidates who display a strong desire and ability to make an impact on students and the greater community both within and outside of the classroom.

SUMMARY:

Assist teachers in the special education classroom with daily instructional and non-instructional activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
:
  • Assists teachers in routine classroom operation (i.e. medical needs, self-help skills, personal hygiene, toileting and diaper changing, and implementation of IEP goals)
  • Follows through with prescribed behavioral support plans, sensory programs and instructional activities
  • Reinforces teacher taught skills
  • Maintains a positive and safe learning environment
  • Bills Medicaid for prescribed services under the supervision of a professional staff member
  • Keeps records of services provided (e.g. Medicaid) and progress on student goals
  • Manages and instructs individual and/or small groups of students
  • May work with special ed students in general ed classroom setting
  • May escort and/or support children to locations within and outside of the school building
  • Manages classroom independently
  • Other duties as assigned
EDUCATION and/or

EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma and must successfully pass a state-approved basic skills test and clerical training.

LANGUAGE

SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively to parents, staff, and students. Ability to handle delicate situations with diplomacy.

OTHER

SKILLS and ABILITIES:

Ability to operate a personal computer and related software. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies. Ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to problem solve and reason with students.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, sit, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is frequently required to bend at the neck and use wrists more than the average person.

May involve lifting or positioning the weight of a student. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and peripheral vision. The employee needs to be able to tell where a sound is coming from and hear in a noisy environment. Occasionally the employee will assist in the physical management of students. May be required to go outdoors in all seasons and weather to monitor students or meet transportation vehicles.

Assists students with eating, hygiene, and toileting.

May be exposed to infections, as well as bodily fluids such as vomit, saliva, or blood.

In accordance with the master agreement between Comstock Park Education Support Personnel Association and the Comstock Park Board of Education.
