University Counselor I /Learning Specialist, Academic Success Center

Wayne State University is searching for an experienced
University Counselor I /Learning Specialist, Academic Success Center at its Detroit campus location.

Essential functions (job duties):

The Academic Success Center (ASC) is seeking an enthusiasticstudent support professional to support students and their academicgoals. The primary responsibilities of this position include management of program operations and recruitment, training,observation, and supervision of peer leaders.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work collaboratively with the leadership and staff of the Academic Success Center and with academic departments across campus to develop and deliver academic support services
  • Assist in the recruitment, training, supervision, and evaluation of peer leaders and other student assistants
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with academic staff and/orfaculty as well as other members of the academic community to promote students’ academic achievement
  • Provide targeted academic support to identified populations,including coordination of individual and group sessions
  • Promote academic success through strategic use of resources; participate in assessment and student data-driven decision making
  • Coordinate and maintain documentation and records, including but not limited to those related to training, course selection, and schedule management
  • Effectively and accurately communicate academic and non-academic requirements, policies and procedures to students and the campus community
  • Collaborate with faculty, University committees, advisors andother academic staff to strengthen outreach efforts and delivery of services
  • Promote a positive and effective learning environment
  • Assess student performance using observations and institutionaldata to establish standards and strategies aimed at increasing student achievement
  • Actively participate in professional organizations
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
  • Required:

    master's degree in education, Social Work, counselingor related fields
  • Required:

    2 years of experience in areas of student support astutoring, study groups, teaching, coaching and/or other forms of academic assistance, learning support, and program development
  • Understanding of and appreciation for inclusion, includingability to work with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds and identities
Preferred qualifications:
  • Ability to facilitate student learning in individual, small groups, and classroom settings
  • Ability to work some nights and weekends, as occasionally required
  • Experience working with students with disabilities
