Job Purpose:

The Colonel Gregory Gadson Office of Military and Veterans Academic Excellence (Gadson OMVAE), in partnership with the University Advising Center (UAC), seeks an Academic Services Officer I/II to join its dedicated team of professionals providing high-quality, student-centered, and culturally responsive support.

This position will be primarily housed within Gadson OMVAE and will provide supplemental academic advising, outreach, transition support, and student-success programming for Wayne State University's veteran and military-connected student population. The successful candidate will also support the daily operations of the Student Veterans Resource Center and serve as a liaison between military-connected students, academic departments, and other University offices.

In addition, the position will serve as a member of the UAC's Pre-Med and Health Science Center (PMHSC), providing academic advising and programming to students pursuing pre-nursing, pre-medical, pre-dental, and pre-physician assistant pathways.

The Academic Services Officer I/II will report to the Senior Director of University Advising and will work closely with Gadson OMVAE leadership regarding the position's military-connected student support responsibilities.

Essential Functions:

· Support the academic onboarding of Wayne State University's veteran and military-connected student population.

· Provide initial and ongoing supplemental academic advising, outreach, transition support, and student-success programming for veterans and military-connected dependents.

· Create a welcoming environment that promotes belonging, engagement, persistence, and academic success.

· Coordinate the veteran holistic admissions review process, including application review, consultation, admitted-student tracking, monitoring, and outreach.

· Develop and distribute communications, alerts, and programming related to student success, enrollment, scholarships, military-connected benefits, and campus opportunities in coordination with the Gadson OMVAE benefits-certification team.

· Build collaborative relationships and serve as a point-of-contact liaison to academic departments and other University offices regarding individual and collective military-connected student needs and concerns.

· Support the daily operations, programming, and student engagement activities of the Student Veterans Resource Center.

· Assist military-connected students with navigating University policies, academic requirements, and campus resources.

· Help students balance academic responsibilities with employment, family, military service, and other life commitments.

· Coordinate Primary School Letter documentation for students seeking approval to complete coursework at another institution.

· Provide advising and support to students preparing for nursing, medical, dental, and physician assistant programs within the WSU Pre-Med and Health Science Center

· Assist students with prerequisite course planning, co-curricular development, patient-care experience requirements, testing, assessments, and the application process for professional programs.

· Assist students exploring alternative academic and career pathways, including career changers and students reconsidering their intended professional program.

· Participate in WSU Open Houses, admission yield events, orientation programs, and other outreach initiatives supporting Gadson OMVAE and PMHSC priorities.

· Support the University Advising Center with New Student Orientation, including early outreach, course scheduling assistance, and advising presentations.
