Job Description

As a Senior Staff Gear Engineer for Allison Transmission’s Gear Systems team, you will be responsible for the gear design and development associated with new transmissions and transmission variants. You will also provide direct support to problem resolution and cost optimization efforts for existing product lines across all end markets.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the Center of Expertise for gear design and analysis with a strong system‑level understanding of interactions with adjacent mechanical components such as shafts, housings, bearings, splines, and carriers.
  • Foster effective collaboration within the team, demonstrating technical expertise and mentoring the success and growth of others.
  • Conduct CAE system‑level modeling and simulation of complete transmissions to evaluate durability, performance, and efficiency.
  • Support DFMEA, PFMEA, and BP activities to guide product design; including generation or modification of existing documents.
  • Perform engineering calculations for component loading, stress, and life to support general sizing efforts.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing teams to ensure design intent is maintained during all design phases from concept validation to production.
  • Execute R&D activities related to gear systems in support of technology information lifecycle and new gear technology, materials, and processes.
  • Contribute to the development of internal capabilities by mentoring engineers and supporting the creation of tools, guidelines, and design/analysis standards.
  • Utilize strong communication and presentation skills to engage stakeholders and address customer needs.
  • Create and maintain high‑quality technical documentation to ensure traceability and support engineering decisions.
  • Stay current with industry advancements in gear design, analysis, manufacturing techniques, post‑processing treatments, and materials.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Master’s degree in a related engineering field, preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated history of developing solutions to complex technical challenges.
  • Strong time‑management skills with the ability to manage multiple programs.
  • 15+ years of engineering experience in gear systems design, analysis, and manufacturing.
  • Strong problem‑solving techniques including Red X, Kepner‑Tregoe, 8D, Six Sigma, and Fault Tree Analysis.
  • 5+ years of experience modeling in SMT Masta, Romax, KISSsoft, or comparable tools.
  • Proficient in gear manufacturing processes and heat treatments.
  • Working knowledge of tribology, preferred.
  • Familiarity with 3D CAD tools (preferably Siemens NX) and GD&T.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and create detail drawings and blueprints.
