Structural Engineer, Civil Engineering
ROLE SUMMARY
The Structural Engineer will help grow the firm’s internal engineering capability, along with collaborating with external consultants, where applicable. This individual is a licensed Professional Engineer who will design and produce structural construction documents across SVA’s healthcare, institutional, and commercial portfolio, coordinate structural scope within the firm’s BIM environment, and serve as the firm’s internal structural authority from early design through construction administration.
This is a high-visibility role which will help shape SVA’s engineering practice as it grows. Healthcare and institutional project experience is a plus; the ability to work independently while collaborating closely with architects and MEP is essential.
- Design and produce stamped structural construction documents on assigned SVA projects across applicable structural systems
- Perform structural analysis and member sizing; prepare foundation designs appropriate to soil conditions, occupancy type, and project scope
- Coordinate structural scope within the project BIM model; participate in multi-discipline coordination meetings and resolve conflicts with architectural and MEP teams
- Collaborate with the architectural team on early-stage structural system selection, bay spacing, floor-to-floor heights, and lateral system strategy
- Produce structural specifications across applicable divisions; review structural shop drawings, submittals, and RFIs during construction administration
- Coordinate with geotechnical consultants on foundation design recommendations and soil bearing assumptions
- Conduct site visits during construction to observe structural installations, review conditions of special inspection, and confirm conformance with construction documents
- Support business development by contributing to proposals and client presentations where in-house structural capability is a differentiator
- Establish structural standards, typical details, and specifications libraries for the firm as the engineering practice is built out
- Bachelor’s degree in structural, civil engineering, or architectural engineering, or a related field
- Master's degree in structural engineering preferred
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) required
- SE licensure a plus, particularly for higher-risk or complex institutional project types
- 7+ years of structural engineering experience across commercial, institutional, or healthcare project types
- Experience in an AEC firm or related industry preferred
- Thorough understanding and capability in Revit and AutoCAD
- Proficiency in structural analysis modeling programs such as RISA, RAM, ETABS, or similar
Demonstrated experience across multiple structural systems: steel, cast-in-place and precast concrete, masonry, and light-gauge and heavy timber framing - Familiarity with applicable codes and standards
- Healthcare or institutional project experience preferred; familiarity with vibration-sensitive environments (operating rooms, imaging suites) a meaningful plus
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multi-discipline architectural team
