Senior Mechanical Engineer - USA
The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for, but not limited to, the following:
Building Mechanical Systems DesignLead the design of building mechanical systems, including:
- Heating
- Ventilation
- Air conditioning
- Boilers
- Chilled water
- Hydronic systems
- Compressed air
- Natural gas
- Plumbing piping systems
- Fluid delivery systems
- Energy conservation initiatives
Provide technical leadership on projects, ensuring designs meet performance, code, budget, and schedule requirements.
Oversee and review mechanical design work prepared by intermediate and junior team members, providing guidance and mentorship.
Technical Leadership & InnovationSeek and apply new technology, tools, and methodologies to improve design efficiency, constructability, and lifecycle performance.
Prepare and review technical reports, engineering documents, and value engineering analyses.
Develop and maintain standards, guidelines, and best practices for mechanical design within the team.
Act as the primary mechanical engineering liaison with clients, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure compliance with project scope and requirements.
Lead client meetings, design presentations, and design coordination sessions with other disciplines.
Provide senior‑level technical consultation, including analyzing facility mechanical system problems in the field and recommending practical, cost‑effective solutions.
Project & Scope DevelopmentLead the development of mechanical scope of work for new projects, including feasibility studies, owner reviews, and construction bid package development.
Support proposal and fee development for mechanical engineering services.
Provide input into project planning, scheduling, and resource allocation from a mechanical discipline perspective.
Construction Support & AdministrationOversee the shop drawing review process, responses to Requests for Information (RFIs), and preparation of field observation reports to ensure timely processing and alignment with project milestones.
Ensure that construction work is in compliance with mechanical plans, specifications, and applicable codes/standards.
Support commissioning activities and project close‑out, including review of as‑built documentation and operational issues.
Lead or oversee mechanical cost estimating for developed scopes of work for assigned projects.
Identify and recommend value engineering opportunities to improve project performance and reduce overall cost.
Provide mentorship, coaching, and technical guidance to intermediate and junior engineers and technologists.
Contribute to a collaborative, multi‑discipline, team‑based environment and help build internal mechanical engineering capabilities.
TravelFrequent travel, including occasional international travel, to client sites and facilities as required.
Job RequirementsEducation & Professional Designation
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a Mechanical Engineering Technology diploma with equivalent experience.
Experience
Minimum 7–10 years of mechanical engineering design experience in building systems, including:
- Heating, ventilation, air conditioning
- Boilers, hot water, chillers, chilled water, pumps
- Hydronic piping, ductwork layout
- Natural gas, plumbing, domestic water, sanitary piping, storm piping
- Energy conservation initiatives
Strong understanding of consulting engineering project phases: feasibility studies, schematic design, detailed design, construction documents, tendering, construction/administration, and project close‑out.
Demonstrated experience designing for clients in educational, commercial, industrial, and healthcare markets.
Demonstrated senior‑level involvement in construction project management, including coordination with contractors and other disciplines.
Codes, Standards & Specifications
Advanced knowledge of local and national codes and standards, including: OBC, NBC, ASHRAE, NFPA, CSA, ASPE, TSSA, etc.
Experience reading, developing, and editing project specifications (NMS, MS, etc.).
Good knowledge and understanding of mechanical systems building design, codes, and specifications, with the ability to interpret and apply them independently.
