Job Description
We are hiring a Metallurgical Laboratory Engineer to work in Dearborn, MI. This full‑time on‑site position is located at Central Laboratory and may convert to the Ford Full Time Salaried Laboratory UAW workforce.
Central Laboratory supports: global product development, global manufacturing plants, warranty concerns, environmental regulatory testing, research, and benchmarking.
Primary Responsibilities- Provide failure analysis and material evaluation of automotive components and manufacturing equipment to support product launches, vehicle teams, and engineering.
- Prepare and evaluate metallic samples using ASTM, SAE, and local test methods.
- Prepare electronic reports with results, photo‑documentation, and conclusions in a timely manner.
- Communicate testing results during meetings with engineers and suppliers.
- Operate and maintain analytical instrumentation and physical testing equipment, including sample preparation equipment, hardness and tensile testers, SEM/EDS, XRF, OE, and metallographs.
- Minimum Bachelor of Science in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or related field.
- Experience with metallographic and materials testing, including microstructure analysis, SEM/EDS, and mechanical testing.
- Experience with failure analysis, optical microscopy, SEM analysis, and mechanical testing.
- Experience writing technical reports.
- Demonstrated ability to: apply quality assurance/control principles, design experiments, develop new analytical testing methods, recommend and implement new instrumentation and techniques, maintain analytical instrumentation, act as a technical resource, multitask and handle complex technical issues, and exhibit excellent interpersonal skills.
