Position Overview

As a Mechanical Designer with Kiewit, you will develop detailed piping and mechanical equipment and systems designs, layouts, and 3D models for power generating plants, carbon capture plants, and related facilities. You will design systems such as steam cycle, boiler feed and condensate, water treatment, fuel handling, hydraulic, heat transfer, conveying, and air and gas systems.

Location

Position can be based in Lenexa, KS;
Houston, TX;
Raleigh, NC; or Phoenix/Tempe, AZ. Roles in Chattanooga, TN;
Detroit, MI; or Richmond, VA will start remotely and transition to hybrid/in-office.

Responsibilities
  • Draft sketches, P&IDs, plans, sections, and details; create equipment layouts and design/model in 3D for power plant systems such as steam cycle, boiler feed and condensate, water treatment, fuel handling, hydraulic, heat transfer, conveying, rotating equipment, and balance‑of‑plant systems (compressed air, gas, service water, HVAC), ensuring interferences are checked and constructability is maintained.
  • Check design deliverables in accordance with industry codes and standards, contract requirements, and company standards.
  • Adhere to schedules and work assignments to ensure successful project completion.
  • Coordinate with other drafters, designers, and team members assigned to a project or task, and support work progress and results.
  • Train and advise interns or new graduates.
  • Apply design standards with little to no supervision.
  • Seek and apply feedback efficiently; work independently and as part of a larger design team.
  • Identify scope changes during a project and produce design changes to stay within budget and schedule.
  • Take initiative to meet or exceed quality and outcome expectations of internal and external customers.
  • Complete miscellaneous tasks to support project development.
  • Participate in project meetings as required.
Qualifications
  • At least 3 years’ experience in design and/or drafting disciplines with a background in piping and/or mechanical equipment and systems design in a 3D modeling environment; power generation experience is preferred.
  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Drafting/Design or engineering preferred; minimum High School or GED Diploma.
  • Experience utilizing 3D programs such as Micro Station, AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks, Smart

    Plant3D, AutoCAD Plant 3D, or similar; knowledge of latest OS and office software.
  • Experience conceptualizing designs/models in 2D/3D environments for mechanical systems and equipment; experience designing and modeling piping and equipment layouts in the power market (thermal, hydroelectric, wind/solar, geothermal) highly desired.
  • Experience creating P&IDs, plot plans, and construction package drawings.
  • Ability to work in a growing, adaptive, multi‑disciplined team environment.
  • Ability to work independently with limited direction and oversight.
