Scope of Work & Purpose

We are seeking a hands‑on Safety and Environmental Engineer with direct experience in industrial safety management and environmental compliance to support the manufacturing of custom metal alloys and advanced materials. This role involves active engagement on the production floor, developing and implementing safety programs, conducting risk assessments, and ensuring environmental compliance for key manufacturing processes. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong practical knowledge of occupational safety, hazardous materials management, and environmental regulations.

Experience with metal powder handling, combustible dust hazards, and industrial hygiene is a plus. This position requires a deep understanding of safety engineering principles, environmental management systems, a proactive approach to preventing incidents, and a strong commitment to creating a safe and sustainable manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities & Duties Safety Program Management
  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive safety programs and procedures for metal alloy manufacturing operations.
  • Conduct job safety analyses, risk assessments, and hazard evaluations for new and existing processes.
  • Lead incident investigations, root cause analyses, and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Develop and deliver safety training programs for employees on topics including hazardous materials handling, PPE usage, and emergency response.
  • Track and analyze safety metrics, including incident rates, near misses, and leading indicators.
  • Implement and oversee contractor safety program to ensure all third‑party personnel meet company HSE standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations (EPA, MDEQ, etc.).
  • Manage environmental permits, reporting requirements, and regulatory inspections.
  • Develop and implement programs for waste management, air emissions control, and water discharge compliance where necessary.
  • Monitor environmental performance and identify opportunities for pollution prevention and sustainability improvements.
Safety, 5S, and Compliance
  • Lead implementation of safety programs such as LOTO, hazardous communication, PPE, and others.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections, audits, and workplace assessments to identify potential hazards.
  • Ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials including metal powders and chemical substances.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies, insurance providers, and external safety consultants.
  • Maintain safety documentation, including SDS library, emergency response plans, and safety equipment records.
  • Provide HSE support for capital projects including design safety reviews, regulatory permitting, environmental assessments, construction phase safety oversight, and start‑up safety reviews.
Preferred Qualifications and Competencies

Education and Experience
  • A B.S. degree in safety engineering, environmental engineering, industrial hygiene, or a related field is essential, with 8+ years of experience in industrial safety and environmental management, ideally within the manufacturing industry. Hands‑on experience with hazardous materials management, combustible dust hazards, and OSHA compliance is highly desirable.
  • A M.S. degree in safety engineering, environmental engineering, industrial hygiene, or a related field is essential, with 5+ years of experience in industrial safety and environmental management, ideally within the manufacturing industry. Experience with metal manufacturing safety and environmental compliance is highly desirable.
Technical Knowledge

Technical expertise in OSHA regulations (particularly 29 CFR 1910), EPA regulations, combustible dust standards (NFPA 652, 654), hazardous materials management, and industrial hygiene is desirable. Candidates should have an understanding of risk assessment methodologies, safety management systems, and environmental management systems (ISO 14001, ISO 45001).
