Our client, a leading electric utility company, is seeking a Senior Systems Operations Engineer to support its Distribution Operations organization. This team is responsible for operating the electric distribution grid in real time and ensuring the reliability of critical operational systems used by the control center.
The Systems Operations team maintains and enhances the applications and models that enable operators to monitor, analyze, and manage the electric grid. This role is heavily focused on power systems analysis, State Estimator support, contingency analysis, model accuracy, and collaborating with system operators to improve reliability and real-time operational awareness.
Job SummaryThe Senior Systems Operations Engineer is responsible for planning, coordinating, and conducting complex engineering activities. This role applies advanced engineering principles, practical field experience, and sound technical judgment to solve challenging engineering problems. The position also provides leadership and technical guidance to engineers, technicians, field personnel, and cross‑functional teams.
Key Responsibilities- Lead and execute complex engineering projects and field assignments.
- Perform engineering studies and analyses to support electric distribution system operations.
- Develop and recommend solutions to engineering challenges affecting grid performance and reliability.
- Support and maintain State Estimator and other operational applications used within the Energy Management System (EMS).
- Analyze system models and recommend improvements based on real‑time operational data.
- Collaborate with system operators and cross‑functional teams to improve operational awareness and grid reliability.
- Develop engineering models and support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance to engineers, technicians, and other team members.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology.
- Minimum of four (4) years of relevant engineering experience.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate across technical and operational teams.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel and Word.
- Master's degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline.
- Experience supporting and maintaining State Estimator applications.
- Familiarity with Energy Management Systems (EMS), including:
- N-1 operating practices
- Experience with PSSE and/or TARA applications.
- Ability to evaluate real‑time system measurements and provide operational feedback to improve EMS models.
