Job Description
A STS Tax Manager, Credits & Incentives advises clients on credit and incentive opportunities related to their business objectives, recommends alternative courses of action, and identifies compliant methods under credit and incentive statutes and regulations. The manager also engages in marketing, networking, business development, and monitors changes in policy. Collaboration with Core Tax Partners, Directors, and Senior Managers is essential to deliver expert credits and incentives services.
Research- Identifies complex credits and incentives situations, outlines the issue(s), and determines appropriate research sources
- Analyzes researched facts and sources before producing a detailed report or an incentives opportunities matrix
- Builds relationships with in‑state and out‑of‑state Department of Tax and Economic Development personnel
- Conducts detailed reviews of income tax returns and identifies significant statutory credit opportunities
- Evaluates client compliance processes and provides customized, automated solutions for annual credits and incentives reporting
- Drafts credits and incentives memorandums and other documentation on various issues
- Reviews client operations to determine potential jurisdictions for credits and incentives opportunities
- Applies applicable state tax consulting sub‑specialties and consults with other STS professionals when appropriate
- Ensures engagement letters are adopted prior to work commencement and manages engagements
- Assists in developing consultative credits and incentives strategies
- Manages client expectations during engagements
- Drafts responses to notices from state taxing authorities
- Represents clients before any tax authority on credits and incentives issues
- Assists with exam support
- Uses credits and incentives research databases and related software to complete assigned tasks
- Provides technical client service to multi‑state clients on credits and incentives matters
- Conducts negotiation credits and incentives matters
- Drafts technical memorandums regarding credits and incentives issues
- Reviews studies of credits and incentives opportunities to identify alternative courses of action that benefit clients
- Develops new or improved ideas to advance client positions in maximizing credits and incentives awards
- Researches credits and incentives strategies
- Suggests marketing approaches for new client acquisitions
- Supervises day‑to‑day workload of Senior Associates and Associates on assigned engagements and reviews work product
- Ensures Associates and interns are trained on relevant tax software
- Evaluates performance of Senior Associates and Associates and assists in developing goals and objectives for professional development
- Delivers periodic performance feedback and completes performance evaluations
- Acts as career advisor to Senior Associates and Associates as appropriate
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or other relevant field – required
- Master’s degree in Accounting or Taxation or Juris Doctorate – preferred
Skills and Abilities
- Five or more years of state and local/multi‑state tax experience with a focus on credits and incentives preferred
- Experience supervising tax professionals on projects or engagements – required
- Experience preparing and/or reviewing tax provisions – preferred
- CPA or other relevant certification – required
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and Word – preferred
- Familiarity with standard tax applications and research tools – preferred
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Superior analytical and research skills
- Solid organizational skills with the ability to meet project deadlines and focus on details
- Ability to multi‑task independently or within a team
- Capability to manage a team of tax professionals and delegate work assignments
- Capacity to build and maintain strong relationships with internal and client personnel
- Executive presence and ability to act as primary contact on engagements
- Advanced knowledge of appropriate application of tax standards and sources utilized in credits and incentives filings
- Understanding of taxable conditions, potential credits and incentives opportunities, and their cause–and–effect relationships
