Under general supervision and according to specific procedures, you will accurately perform pre‑analytical and post‑analytical tasks, process information, and interact with patients and health care professionals.
Responsibilities include:
- Prioritizing incoming specimens and processing patient specimens in accordance with department safety and OSHA guidelines.
- Drawing blood samples from patients based on physician orders, verifying patient identification, and collecting insurance information.
- Generating and attaching labels to specimen samples and performing specimen processing and aliquoting as required.
- Verifying specimen integrity, sorting, and delivering specimens to the appropriate testing laboratory.
- Entering and reviewing laboratory test data in the computer system, detecting and correcting errors.
- Communicating with patients to explain procedures and answer routine questions.
- Maintaining a clean work area, stocking supplies, and cleaning equipment and instruments.
- Transporting specimens and reports, and ordering tests in the system as needed.
- Conducting routine inspection, maintenance, and quality control checks on equipment.
- Preparing patients for tolerance tests or other specific tests.
- Performing clerical duties such as answering the telephone, scheduling appointments, and maintaining records.
- Monitoring personal work behavior and performance, and communicating training needs to management.
- Complying with departmental safety policies and OSHA guidelines, including use of personal protective equipment.
- Checking organizational communication daily (e.g., Outlook, laboratory software, posted notices).
- Performing other related duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent education required.
- Six months experience in a medical training environment or certification in a health care environment, or related science field.
- Basic studies in medical terminology or a related health science field preferred.
- Customer service experience in a service environment preferred.
- Phlebotomy certification preferred for Phlebotomists.
DMC University Laboratories (DMCUL) is a regional, integrated laboratory system providing services to the eight hospitals of Detroit Medical Center. DMCUL offers over 1,000 tests, with less than 1% sent to outside reference laboratories. The facility serves the entire Southeast Michigan market and is growing rapidly.
