Summary
As a Patient Care Associate (PCA), you are a member of the patient care services team with primary responsibilities for technical, multi‑skilled direct and indirect patient care activities. You will work under the supervision of a registered nurse who delegates tasks based on patient needs and your skills and abilities. You will report all deviations from expected patient parameters to the registered nurse.
Responsibilities
Collaborate and cooperate with care team members to ensure consistency and quality of care and promote productive employee relations among staff.Perform a variety of basic patient care activities under the direction of a registered nurse; report changes in patient medical and/or emotional condition to the registered nurse; assist nursing personnel in responding to various emergency patient situations.Assist patient in activities of daily living by feeding, bathing, toileting, and other personal hygiene regimes.Follow all departmental policies, procedures, and objectives; continuous improvement initiatives; safety, environmental, and infection control standards.Demonstrate sensitivity to patient comfort and privacy; answer questions from patients and their families; explain procedures and processes within the scope of training and abilities; maintain confidentiality.As required by unit needs, perform general clerical duties, which may include answering telephones, call lights, and greeting patients and visitors.Enhance personal growth through participation in workshops, educational programs, in‑service meetings, and reviewing current literature; share joint accountability with the institution for maintaining competencies.Perform other tasks as assigned (see task list).Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED.Graduation from a practical nursing school, orCompletion of one of the following:- A Certified PCA/PCT Program
- A Certified Nurse Assistant Program or equivalent training.
- A Medical Assistant Program.
- An EMT program.
- A phlebotomy training program.
Preferred:
Six (6) months direct patient care experience.Skills Required
Good analytical and observational problem‑solving skills.Mathematical ability to perform calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.Ability to adapt to new technologies used in the work environment.High level of interpersonal and verbal skill and teamwork commitment to effectively function as a team member supporting all services delivered on the patient unit.Good reading, writing, and comprehension skills to understand, effectively communicate, and contribute to procedures, processes, orders, methods, and standards.Physical ability to regularly walk and stand (80–90% of work time); lift soiled linens and move equipment; assist patients in repositioning, bed‑to‑stretcher transferring, basic activities of daily living, and maintenance locomotion requiring lifting of heavy items, bending, pulling, pushing, standing, and walking.Visual acuity and manual dexterity.Ability to perform routine clerical functions such as answering telephones, taking messages, and basic retrieval of computer information.Demonstrates willingness to make a meaningful contribution to the work environment as evidenced through behavior and attitude.Facility Description
