System Security Specialist
Wayne State University is searching for an experienced System Security Specialist at its Detroit campus location.
Job PurposeThe System Security Analyst is responsible for the day‑to‑day operations of the Information Security and access management team. This role works closely with both the Identity Management (IDM) and Operations Team Leads to support various aspects of information security functions provided for the University and within a collaborative and multifaceted team environment. The position reports to the Senior Director, Chief Information Security Officer.
EssentialFunctions
- Firewall Change Requests: Analyze requested changes to existing firewall rulesets, prove the need and accuracy, obtain proof and documentation where needed, identify specific firewalls to be modified and create rule elements with least‑privilege concepts in mind, accurately create and deploy changes, log and document all changes.
- Access Management: Act as the first responder to Enterprise System access and de‑provisioning requests, triage and address low‑level inquiries, maintain documentation of the Enterprise System Access Process.
- Operate University Security Tools: Configure, maintain and provide daily operations of security tools such as vulnerability management scanning and issuing SSL certificates, manage SaaS tools for 2FA, password management and security training.
- Triage Incoming Operations Incidents: Monitor incident queue, act as first responder, assess relevance, credibility and criticality, gather logs for verification, and escalated critical incidents to senior staff.
- Low‑Level Security Incident Response: Primary responder for low‑level incidents, gather and analyze logs and network captures, resolve per procedures, document and log all aspects of the investigation.
- Security Projects and Issue Identification: Understand current security landscape, identify areas for risk reduction, work on security projects under guidance of the Information Security Officer.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, or related field, or equivalent education and experience.
- Minimum two years of experience supporting technology, application development or security administration in an enterprise environment.
- Experience in a broad range of technologies is preferred.
- Experience in a higher education environment is a plus.
- Technology: Intermediate networking concepts (routing and TCP/IP), intermediate Windows OS, preferred Linux and Mac OS, intermediate firewall functionality, basic identity and directory services (RBAC, MFA), basic understanding of security threats and controls.
- Analytical: Ability to analyze impact, apply logical thinking, analyze large data volumes, propose and evaluate solutions.
- Problem Solving: Identify and resolve problems timely, anticipate implications, lead analysis and process improvement.
- Interpersonal: Communicate effectively, balance interests, resolve conflict, build consensus.
- Teamwork: Work with others at all levels, contribute to committees and task forces, build a collaborative environment.
- Customer Focus: Establish and maintain customer relationships, proactively identify and resolve issues, set customer service standards.
- Communication: Provide direction and guidance, express clearly in conversation and writing, summarize complex issues.
