Healthcare Principal – Detroit Office

Full‑time position. Minimum three business days per week in the office unless working on business development or project implementation activities.

Vision for the Role

The Healthcare Principal will serve as a strategic and visionary leader, advancing our healthcare practice through design excellence, thought leadership, and trusted client partnerships. A deep understanding of the healthcare industry is required for this role. The goal is to deliver innovative, high‑performing healthcare environments that improve patient outcomes, support caregivers, and respond to the evolving needs of healthcare systems. Through exemplary client work and leadership within the firm, this role will shape a visible and influential healthcare design culture that attracts new clients, inspires teams, and reinforces Kahn’s legacy of innovation and impact.

Job Responsibilities
  • Organizational Leadership – Contribute to a culture of ingenuity, curiosity, and belonging. Mentor and inspire the next generation of leaders. Coordinate recruitment and training of staff essential to healthcare projects.
  • Business Development – Cultivate new and existing healthcare client and partner relationships in partnership with the Director of Strategic Relationships and other business development leaders. Actively participate in professional associations and networking events. Find and receive requests for proposals. Lead the development of proposals with Marketing. Champion the interview team. Contribute to financial profits through healthcare project wins.
  • Project Leadership – Lead the design and delivery of healthcare projects. Collaborate with operational and technical directors and project leads to ensure innovative solutions. Manage client relationships throughout the project. Proactively monitor and manage to complete the project within schedule and fees. Participate in post‑occupancy evaluation and research initiatives.
The Ideal Candidate
  • Health Care Project Experience – Minimum ten years as a project principal and/or project architect for construction budgets greater than $25M.
  • Organization Leadership – Minimum three years as a department or market leader with annual financial goals.
  • Relationship Management – Experience establishing new relationships with potential clients and partners, growing the relationship that results in new projects, and maintaining the relationship with communication, issue resolution, and follow‑up.
  • Business Development – Experience in all stages of finding and winning project work, including responding to RFPs, formulating an inspiring interview, and finalizing the project contract.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in architecture.
  • Preferred credentials – LEED, WELL, EDAC.
