Refinery Operator Trainee

Marathon Petroleum Company LP (MPC) is seeking an immediate opening for a Refinery Operator Trainee at its Detroit, Michigan refinery. The role focuses on monitoring and operating refinery units, ensuring product quality and safety, and assisting other operators during training and day‑to‑day operations.

• Monitor units under control to maintain maximum product specifications and yields.
• Startup and shutdown units and safely operate during process upsets.
• Assist other unit operators with training and day‑to‑day operations.
• Manage and monitor outside equipment and control functions involved in refinery processes.
• Gather data from control functions, analyze and interpret it into operational adjustments or recommendations.
• Provide assistance with unit startups, shutdowns, and emergency response.
• Develop in‑depth knowledge of the physical portion of the plant.

• High school graduate or GED equivalent required.
• Some college or technical coursework preferred.
• Excellent math, computer, communication, and analytical skills.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Willingness to work a 12‑hour rotating shift schedule including weekends, holidays, and overtime.

• Climb over 75 feet.
• Work in confined spaces, indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Wear proper safety equipment, including self‑contained breathing apparatus when required.
• Use hand tools.

Rotating Day/Night 12‑hour shifts: four days on, four days off, from 6:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.–6:00 a.m. Overtime is required.

Hourly wage: starting at $35.59/hr in 2026, increasing to $36.66/hr on February1,2027. After becoming fully qualified or after 9 months, wage increases to $39.86/hr subsequent annual increases apply over a three‑year period. Expected to reach $47.50/hr in 2029 and $49.17/hr in 2030. Benefits include company‑matched 401(k), pension, medical coverage, paid time off, parental leave, educational reimbursement, and eligibility for a discretionary annual bonus program.
