This fast-paced medical-surgical unit specializes in caring for a wide range of patients, including those with COPD, pneumonia, sepsis, renal failure, cellulitis, diabetes, dementia, peritonitis, and COVID-19. As an RN in the Pulmonary Medicine Center, you will:
- Deliver high-quality, patient-centered care using evidence-based practices
- Monitor and support patients with complex medical needs
- Communicate clearly with patients, families, and the care team at hand-offs
- Educate patients and families to support recovery and safe discharge
- Document care accurately in real time

This position supports Mercy's patient-centered care philosophy by ensuring competent, respectful, and compassionate nursing care that adheres to Mercy's standards and procedures while caring for patients. The Registered Staff Nurse collaborates with the unit team to identify clinical problems, develop a plan, and educate patients and families.
Job DescriptionJob Duties
- Ensure accurate and clinically relevant information is communicated with patients, families, and co-workers at hand-offs and as needed to support the best possible patient outcomes
- Demonstrate competent assessment, planning, intervention, coordination and evaluation based on the patient plan of care
- Continuously assess patient and family needs to provide quality, patient-centered care
- Demonstrate critical thinking to implement the patient plan of care and nursing interventions
- Maintain accurate, real-time documentation to support the healthcare team
- Lead by example to foster a healthy work environment and help meet unit goals
- Respect and dignity for all patients, families, visitors, and staff to maintain a professional environment
- Direct other licensed and non-licensed personnel in care as assigned
- Communicate effectively with patients, including non-verbal cues, fears, anxieties, and language/cultural considerations
- Respond to emergencies within scope of practice
- Adhere to patient safety practices throughout the patient experience
- Collaborate with all members of the healthcare team
- Provide ongoing education to patients and families
- Delegate to appropriate staff as required by department
- Stay current on evidence-based practice and applicable protocols
- Follow Mercy safety guidelines and promptly report unsafe conditions
Specific Duties
Pulmonary Medicine Center
- Complete yearly training on Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis
- Solid foundation in basic nursing principles and procedures
- Competency in unit-specific skills
- Ability to provide safe and effective basic nursing care
- Exemplary customer service including verbal and non-verbal communication
- Welcoming environment for all healthcare team members
- Commitment to ongoing self-development and learning
- Previous RN experience in an acute care setting preferred
- Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing preferred
- Current license to practice as a registered nurse in Iowa or a compact state required
- Current Basic Life Support certification as per American Heart Association
- Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse/Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required; submit certification before start
