Job Summary

Assistant Chief Nursing Officer supports the Chief Nursing Officer in planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing services across Detroit Medical Center hospitals. The role provides leadership over nursing supervisors, directors, and clinical education, ensuring competent patient care delivery across multiple facilities.

Responsibilities

Functional Expectations & Requirements:

  • Facilitates mechanisms to guide provision of nursing care for all patients.
  • Participates in designing systems compatible with the ANA Code of Ethics and nursing standards.
  • Assists CNO with developing and evaluating organizational planning systems.
  • Supports development of standards of nursing practice and care with nursing leaders.
  • Advocates processes that allow creative, cost‑effective plans for client‑centered outcomes.
  • Promotes integration of contemporary management theories, research findings, and practice standards into planning.
  • Supports staff competency in planning and managing transitions.
  • Advocates integration of policies into action plans for desired outcomes.
  • Uses clinical, human resource, and financial data to integrate standards of care and facilitate continuity.
  • Ensures CNO is informed of critical issues within assigned departments.
  • Provides training and coaching to managers and staff for talent selection.
  • Leads professional, community, and governmental bodies shaping healthcare policy.
  • Directs clinical nursing goals and directions.
  • Collaboratively develops and implements systems to achieve clinical and administrative goals.
  • Evaluates and revises nursing services to enhance client/family‑centered outcomes.
  • Supports nursing management in critical thinking, conflict management, and problem solving.
  • Ensures ongoing evaluation and innovation of nursing services.
  • Supports research dissemination and utilization in nursing and management.
  • Mentors staff and future nurse administrators.
  • Collaborates with recruiters for talent acquisition and retention.
  • Leads departmental transitions, applying best practices and eliminating barriers.
  • Promotes harmonious relationships among personnel, medical staff, patients, and others.
  • Evaluates quality and effectiveness of nursing practice and administration.
  • Ensures performance improvement programs are viable.
  • Identifies quality indicators for monitoring and evaluation.
  • Participates in peer review and privileging of advanced practice nurses/Allied Health Professionals.
  • Engages in interdisciplinary evaluation teams.
  • Maintains knowledge of JCAHO, state and federal regulations, and ANA Standards.
  • Ensures staff operate within legal boundaries of nursing practice.
  • Assists CNO to assure compliance with standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Visits units regularly to assess patient care quality and staff satisfaction.
  • Evaluates own performance against professional standards and regulations.
  • Engages in regular self‑performance appraisal.
  • Seeks constructive feedback and takes action to achieve goals.
  • Maintains current knowledge in administrative practice and expands skill base.
  • Networks with peers and shares ideas for mutual problem solving.
  • Maintains professional affiliations for growth.
  • Collaborates with nursing staff, interdisciplinary teams, executives, medical staff, and stakeholders.
  • Partners with human resources on recruitment and retention programs.
  • Facilitates communication between self and staff.
  • Collaborates with other providers for seamless delivery of services.
  • Makes decisions based on ethical principles and advocates on behalf of patients and personnel.
  • Maintains privacy, confidentiality, and security of patient, staff, and organizational data.
  • Promotes non‑discriminatory climate sensitive to socio‑cultural diversity.
  • Supports systems to address ethical issues within nursing and the organization.
  • Develops systems for preventing and reporting abuse of patients.
  • Acts as Patient Ombudsman facilitating communication with patients and families.
  • Supervises department functions and promotes hospital‑wide leadership image.
  • Confers with supervisors and directors on department status.
  • Ensures new employees attend orientation within 30 days.
